Michael Jordan speaks out on George Floyd death and protests: 'We have had enough' - USA TODAY

Michael Jordan spent his accomplished NBA career mostly silent on political or racial issues. On Sunday, though, the Charlotte Hornets owner refused to stick to sports.

Jordan offered strong sentiments about a white police officer (Derek Chauvin) killing an unarmed black man (George Floyd) after kneeling on his neck despite repeated protests that he struggled to breathe.

"I am deeply saddened, truly pained and plain angry. I see and feel everyone’s pain, outrage and frustration," Jordan said in a statement the Hornets released Sunday. "I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in our country. We have had enough."

Jordan received some criticism during his playing career for remaining apolitical. The most notable example: Jordan declined to endorse Democrat Harvey Gantt, an African American, who ran for Senate in 1990 against incumbent Republican Jesse Helms, who had staunchly opposed various civil rights initiatives.

In "The Last Dance" documentary, Jordan said that he contributed an undisclosed amount of money to Gantt’s campaign. But he defended his inaction, saying, "I never thought of myself as an activist. I thought of myself as a basketball player."

In recent years, Jordan has become more involved with social issues. In 2016, Jordan gave grants of $1 million to the Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in hopes of fostering more trust between law enforcement and local communities.

Jordan, whose dad was murdered in 1993, added, "my heart goes out to the family of George Floyd and to the countless others whose lives have been brutally and senselessly taken through acts of racism and injustice."

"I don't have the answers, but our collective voices show strength and the inability to be divided by others," Jordan said in the statement. "We must listen to each other, show compassion and empathy and never turn our backs on senseless brutality. We need to continue peaceful expressions against injustice and demand accountability. Our unified voice needs to put pressure on our leaders to change our laws, or else we need to use our vote to create systemic change. Every one of us needs to be part of the solution, and we must work together to ensure justice for all."

Report: MLBPA Proposes 114-Game Season, Salary Deferral Options for Players - Bleacher Report

VARIOUS CITIES, - MARCH 12: A detail of baseballs during a Grapefruit League spring training game between the Washington Nationals and the New York Yankees at FITTEAM Ballpark of The Palm Beaches on March 12, 2020 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Major League Baseball received a proposal from the MLB Players Association on Sunday afternoon that included a 114-game 2020 season beginning June 30, according to The Athletic's Evan Drellich:

Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal expanded upon the proposed opt-out clause for players:

The 2020 MLB season was originally scheduled to begin with a March 26 Opening Day, which was suspended March 12 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier Sunday, ESPN's Buster Olney reported from the league owners' perspective: "Sources say there is a group of owners perfectly willing to shut down the season, to slash payroll costs and reduce losses, and the disparate views among the 30 teams have been reflected in the decisions to fire and furlough."

Both sides will have to come to terms on a return-to-play-plan this week in order for a June 30 start date to be plausible:

A point of contention from the players' side has been reduction in pay and, more specifically, a proposed shared revenue plan from earlier this month.

Several players have come out publicly against taking any more pay cuts:

ESPN's Jeff Passan broke down what the league had proposed to the players last week:

The MLB and MLBPA previously came to an agreement in April that included player pay cuts, as relayed by Passan.

George Floyd Reverberates Globally: Thousands Protest In Germany, U.K., Canada - NPR

U.S. protesters rallying against the killing of George Floyd and countless other black Americans are being heard around the world as demonstrators launched their own protests in the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada over the weekend.

Germany

In Berlin, protesters gathered Sunday at the U.S. Embassy, demonstrating for a second day.

Hundreds of German demonstrators marched in solidarity with American protesters Saturday and Sunday, and chanted "Stop Killing Us," "Black Lives Matter" and "No Justice, No Peace."

On a former section of the the Berlin Wall, in Mauerpark, a memorial popped up over the weekend depicting Floyd and "I can't breathe," some of his last words.

Beyond protests that gathered thousands at the capital over the weekend, four soccer players in Germany's Bundesliga league addressed Floyd's killing during games. One player took a knee on the field. Another exposed a shirt underneath a jersey that read "Justice for George Floyd."

U.K.

Thousands demonstrated on Sunday in London, according to the BBC, to protest Floyd's death and police brutality.

Britons concentrated their protest in central London, with hundreds taking a knee in Trafalgar Square for nine minutes, signifying the amount of time the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned George Floyd to the ground.

They marched along the Thames and to the U.S. Embassy, chanting "Black Lives Matter" and carrying signs with slogans such as, "How Many More?" "Racism is a Global Issue" and "Your Silence Is Deafening."

According to the Metropolitan Police 23 demonstrators were arrested in central London on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the U.K., demonstrations also took place in Manchester and Cardiff.

Canada

In Canada, Toronto citizens gathered in protest against injustice towards black people globally and against the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a 29-year-old black woman who lived in Toronto, and the circumstances surrounding her death.

Korchinski-Paquet fell from her balcony while police officers were responding to a "domestic incident" in her home.

Iran

And in the Iranian city of Mashhad, a candlelight vigil was held in Floyd's honor, with Black Lives Matter posters and illustrations of Floyd posted.

Brad Keselowski wins at Bristol after Chase Elliott and Joey Logano wreck while racing for the lead - Yahoo Sports

Brad Keselowski simply stole a win at Bristol on Sunday.

Keselowski took advantage of two crashes as drivers were racing for the lead ahead of him to win for the second time in three races.

The second crash happened between Chase Elliott and Joey Logano with less than three laps to go. Elliott got to the inside of Logano but his car snapped loose in the corner. Elliott slid into Logano and the two went into the wall as Keselowski drove on past.

This didn't work for Chase Elliott. (via Fox)

Elliott and Logano’s crash was preceded by a restart for a caution caused by Denny Hamlin’s spin while racing for the lead. Hamlin spun after he was racing with Elliott and Logano for the lead.

How Denny Hamlin crashed. (via Fox Sports)

“Oh my goodness. I think everyone on this Discount Tire Ford Mustang team is going to go to Vegas,” Keselowski said. “Is it open yet?”

Keselowski was fifth when Hamlin spun after working his way into the top five on fresher tires than the cars ahead of him. But he wasn’t going to be in a position to get the win without some help. And boy, did he get some help.

“I could see Joey and Chase, they were really racey there,” Keselowski said. “I didn’t know what was going to happen but I knew if I just kept my eye open, something good might happen and it turned out it did.”

Clint Bowyer finished second. Keselowski got the win thanks to a, uh, patient call by NASCAR race control. After throwing quick cautions earlier in the race for mild wall hits by Austin Dillon and Kevin Harvick, NASCAR chose to let the race finish under green after Elliott and Logano hit the wall.

Keselowski won the Coca-Cola 600 a week ago after he stayed out on the track when a caution flag flew with two laps to go. Elliott, the race leader, pitted for fresh tires. But seven other cars stayed out with Keselowski and Elliott restarted 11th. Keselowski held off Jimmie Johnson for the win on old tires.

Elliott and Logano talk it out

Elliott and Logano had a pit road conversation after the exited their cars. And put on their masks, of course. Logano told Fox that he had to coax an apology out of Elliott.

“He wrecked me. He got loose underneath me,” Logano said. “The part that’s frustrating is afterwards, a simple apology, like be a man and come up to someone and say ‘My bad.’ But I had to force an apology, which to me, is just childish.”

Logano continued.

“It’s hard racing at the end. I get that. It’s hard racing,” he said. “But golly man, be a man and take the hit when you’re done with it.”

Elliott said that he felt like that moment was his shot at the lead.

“Just going for the win and trying to get a run underneath him. I don’t know if I had a tire going down or if I just got loose on entry but as soon as I turned off the wall, I had zero chance in making it,” Elliott said. “I’ll certainly take the blame.”

Blaney’s bad Bristol luck

Ryan Blaney was running second when saved his car from a spin during the second stage of Sunday’s race. And he still finished last.

Why? Well, just watch.

This was a great save. But Ryan Blaney still had a torn up car. (via Fox Sports)

It’s the second time in three years that Blaney has been caught in a crash while running near the front at Bristol. He led 100 laps in the 2018 spring race at the track and finished 35th after he couldn’t avoid a crash ahead of him. He led 60 laps on Sunday, the fourth time in the last five races at Bristol that he’s led at least 60 laps.

We’re betting that Blaney will win a race at Bristol sometime soon.

Jimmie Johnson finishes third

Is Johnson getting closer and closer to ending his winless streak? Johnson hasn’t won a Cup Series race in three years. But he was a top-10 fixture on Sunday and even got up to as high as second in the final stage.

Johnson ultimately finished third, ahead of Kyle Busch and Erik Jones. And it’s hard not to see the seven-time champion winning a race in his final season given the speed that Hendrick Motorsports has shown so far. The team has won two races already this season and Elliott was in line for a potential third win in nine races if it wasn’t for that final crash.

After Johnson missed the playoffs for the first time in 2019, it would be fun to see him end his Cup Series career on a better note. And while he was disqualified after running second at Charlotte a week ago, it’s pretty clear that things are better in 2020 than they were in 2019.

An enjoyable race

The finish to Sunday’s race will immediately make it a memorable one for most fans, even if they watched just 50 or all 500 laps. But it’s worth pointing out how enjoyable the entirety of Sunday’s event was. Especially as it was the first event at Bristol with NASCAR’s reduced downforce rules.

NASCAR admitted the mistake of high downforce at short tracks in 2019 and cut it significantly for all small tracks in 2020. On Sunday, that led to drivers on the edge in the corners and lots of moments where guys were on the edge of control. It’s fun to watch drivers muscle 3,000-plus-pound stock cars off a corner, and that’s what we got at Bristol.

Martinsville, the site of a race on June 10, was the track most impacted by the high downforce changes in 2019. If Bristol is any indication of what we could see at Martinsville in less than two weeks, the racing in Virginia will be a whole lot more fun than it was a year ago.

Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Trevor Lawrence among athletes to speak out after George Floyd's death - CBS Sports

The entire nation is reeling after the death of George Floyd, an African-American man in Minneapolis killed after a police officer was caught on video kneeling on his neck for over seven minutes. Floyd's death has sparked protests against police brutality, specifically against the African-American community, across the country.

Those protests have featured a number of prominent members of the increasingly socially conscious sports community. Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown even drove 15 hours from Boston to Atlanta to participate in protests there. Even those who did not participate in the protests directly have used their platforms to voice their opinions. Michael Jordan was the latest major figure to do so on Sunday.

He was far from the only prominent athlete to speak out. Below is just a sampling of the sports world's reaction to what is happening around the country.

Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri penned a piece that was published in the Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail, in response to the protests. Ujiri acknowledged the 2019 incident when a police officer stopped him from joining the Raptors on the court following their NBA championship victory.

"If it was another team president heading for the court -- a white team president -- would he have been stopped by that officer? I've wondered that," Ujiri wrote. "I recognize what happened in Oakland last June is very different from what happened in Minneapolis last Monday. My own experience only cost me a moment; Mr. Floyd's experience cost him his life."

In the NFL, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York announced that he is donating $1 million to "local and national organizations who are creating change" amid the protests.

Floyd was a friend of former NBA player Stephen Jackson.

(Some language NSFW)

The UFC's Jon Jones spoke to TMZ about Floyd's death saying, "Anyone who has practiced the very basics of jujitsu recognizes a [blood choke] when they see this. That was as clear as day murder, torture."

"What that man went through was worse than drowning," Jones added. "I wouldn't wish the way George Floyd was murdered on my worst enemy. That officer applied just enough pressure to keep him alive for almost six minutes in that chokehold. In all my years of fighting I can honestly say I've never experienced anything close to that level of torture."

Why former NFL exec wants Vikings to sign Kaepernick - NBCSports.com

With the recent events in Minnesota, Louisville and other parts of the United States, former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is back in the news.

It has become clear that Kaepernick's message from his protests during the national anthem in 2017 NFL season didn't take hold.

The deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis this week, and Breonna Taylor in Louisville in March have led to protests all over the country.

In a column posted Saturday, former NFL executive Joe Lockhart and current CNN political analyst Joe Lockhart said the league attempted to convince teams to sign Kaepernick in 2017 and 2018, and he felt they had "done a righteous job."

Based on the events in Minnesota this week, Lockhart now realizes how wrong he was.

In an attempt to right a wrong, Lockhart believes the Minnesota Vikings should sign Kaepernick to a contract and give him a legitimate chance to compete for the back-up quarterback spot in training camp.

"The situation in Minnesota right now offers a unique opportunity to deal with the symbols of racial injustice," Lockhart wrote. "As a small, but important step, the owners of the Minnesota Vikings, Zygi and Mark Wilf, can send a strong message by offering Colin Kaepernick a contract to play with the Vikings. Bring him into camp, treat him like any of the other players given a chance to play the game they love.

"It will not solve the problem of blacks and police violence. But it will recognize the problem that Kaepernick powerfully raised, and perhaps show that, with courage, real progress can be made."

[49ERS INSIDER PODCAST: Listen to the latest episode]

Kaepernick hasn't played in the NFL since 2016 and opted out of his contract in March of 2017 after the 49ers told him they planned to release him.

Last year, Kaepernick worked out in Atlanta, but no NFL team signed him.

While Kaepernick is arguably more talented than most back-up quarterbacks and even a few starters, he has remained unsigned since leaving the 49ers. Lockhart claims NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spent a lot of time "prodding and pushing" teams to sign the former second-round pick. No one followed through, and Lockhart explained why.

"But for many owners it always came back to the same thing," Lockhart wrote. "Signing Kaepernick, they thought, was bad for business. An executive from one team that considered signing Kaepernick told me the team projected losing 20 [percent] of their season ticket holders if they did. That was a business risk no team was willing to take, whether the owner was a Trump supporter or a bleeding-heart liberal (yes, those do exist). As bad of an image problem it presented for the league and the game, no owner was willing to put the business at risk over this issue."

[RELATED: NFL briefly lists Kap as 'retired']

The only way Lockhart's suggestion can work is if the Vikings give Kaepernick a real shot to compete to be Kirk Cousins' back-up. Even though he hasn't played the last three NFL seasons, Kaepernick has more natural talent than Jake Browning, Sean Mannion and Nate Stanley, the three other quarterbacks on the Vikings' roster.

Kaepernick deserves another shot to play in the NFL. If the Vikings want to make that happen, great. But it cannot be a PR move.

UFC Fight Night results, highlights: Gilbert Burns dominates Tyron Woodley in one-sided beatdown - CBSSports.com

The UFC on ESPN 9 main event between Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns may well have signaled a changing of the guard in the welterweight division after former champion Woodley was dominated from start to finish. Woodley was returning to the Octagon for the first time since a decisive title loss to Kamaru Usman last March and was looking to make a big statement in an attempt to get back to a championship fight. Instead, Burns pounced early in the first round and didn't give an inch to the former champion through the final bell as the UFC returned to their home base of Las Vegas, with the fights going down from the UFC APEX.

Burns scored with a pair of right hands early in the first round, rocking Woodley and opening him up to a massive flurry. Burns managed to maintain control on the ground, despite Woodley being able to survive the early danger, he was left with a massive gash over his left eye and seemed to have had the fight beaten out of him in those opening moments.

Can't get enough UFC? Subscribe to our podcast State of Combat with Brian Campbell where we break down everything you need to know in the Octagon.

Woodley spent the majority of the fight circling around the cage, looking for single knockout shots while Burns worked him over with strikes to the body and a steady dose of leg kicks. The dominance never stopped for Burns, even if the flashy moments at the open never returned.

By the end of the fight, Burns had compiled an advantage of 76-to-29 in significant strikes, scored the only two takedowns of the fight and had positional control on the ground for nearly five minutes to just two seconds for Woodley.

Given the dominance, it was no surprise when the official scorecards were heavily tilted in Burns' favor by scores of 50-45, 50-44 and 50-44.

The statement win was the sort of performance that often leads to championship opportunities, and Burns wasted little time after his victory calling out his friend and training partner, UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

"Come on, I love the champ, my training partner, Kamaru Usman," Burns said. "But give me a shot. I want to fight for the title. A lot of respect. A lot of love for you. But I think I'm next. I'm next. I'm right there. He beat the former champion I just beat the same way, I don't know, maybe better. I think I'm next. I just beat the former champ and I have no scratch. No nothing."

CBS Sports was with you all night with live updates and coverage of UFC Fight Night from Las Vegas. Check out a complete recap of the results below.

Roger Goodell issues statement on George Floyd's death, mass protests; Eric Reid, Kenny Stills respond - Yahoo Sports

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement on Saturday afternoon following the death of George Floyd and days of widespread protests and riots across the country.

“The NFL family is greatly saddened by the tragic events across our country,” Goodell said in a statement. “The protesters' reactions to these incidents reflect the pain, anger and frustration that so many of us feel.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Mr. George Floyd and to those who have lost loved ones, including the families of Ms. Breonna Taylor in Louisville, and Mr. Ahmaud Arbery, the cousin of Tracy Walker of the Detroit Lions.

“As current events dramatically underscore, there remains much more to do as a country and as a league. These tragedies inform the NFL's commitment and our ongoing efforts. There remains an urgent need for action. We recognize the power of our platform in communities and as part of the fabric of American society. We embrace that responsibility and are committed to continuing the important work to address these systemic issues together with our players, clubs and partners.”

The statement, however, didn’t go over well with social media users.

Houston Texans wide receiver Kenny Stills, one of the most prominent players in the league who kneeled with Colin Kaepernick during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, slammed Goodell for the statement.

Eric Reid followed suit, too, appearing to make fun of the league’s “Songs of the Season” campaign.

Goodell is the latest sports figure to address Floyd’s death in Minneapolis police custody on Monday, after video of his arrest — which showed white police officer Derek Chauvin putting his knee in Floyd’s neck for several minutes while he yelled, “I can’t breathe” — went viral. Chauvin has since been arrested and is now facing murder and manslaughter charges.

Goodell also referenced the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, who was jogging in Georgia in February when he was shot and killed by two white men, and Breonna Taylor, a Louisville EMT who was shot multiple times and killed in her home in the middle of the night by police during a narcotics investigation in March.

Several prominent figures in the NFL have made statements in recent days, too, including Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, current No. 1 overall draft pick Joe Burrow and Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores.

Earlier Saturday, the NFL issued a response to a column by a former league executive who wrote that team owners thought Kaepernick’s protests made signing him “bad for business”, saying clubs can still sign him if they wish.

OSU basketball transfer Seth Towns detained by police during Columbus protest - Yahoo Sports

Incoming Ohio State basketball transfer Seth Towns was detained by police on Friday during a protest in downtown Columbus, according to OSU sports site Eleven Warriors and confirmed by Cleveland.com.

Eleven Warriors posted a video of Towns being handcuffed by law enforcement late on Friday night as he continued to lead fellow protesters in chants.

A photo of Towns being detained could also be seen in an Instagram post from a local Columbus photographer.

The protest in Columbus is just one of many that have popped up around the country in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.

Towns, who just graduated from Harvard on Thursday with a degree in sociology, was not arrested or charged. According to NBC Sports, Towns was protesting peacefully when the police asked him to move out of the street. He refused, which is when he was handcuffed and detained. Towns was reportedly then moved out of the street by the officers and released.

News of Towns’ detainment surfaced several hours after men’s basketball head coach Chris Holtmann posted his thoughts about Floyd’s death on Twitter.

Holtmann issued a second statement through the program on Saturday afternoon.

Towns, a Columbus native, was the 2017-2018 Ivy League Player of the Year. He’s spent the last two years recovering from several knee surgeries, and has two seasons of eligibility left. According to The Athletic’s Bill Landis, Towns and Holtmann spoke late Friday night.

On Saturday afternoon, the Twitter account for the Harvard men’s basketball team tweeted a supportive statement from Towns’ former coach, Tommy Amaker.
