Derrick Henry sees massive numbers for Alabama's Heisman finalists in Rose Bowl - Touchdown Alabama Magazine

Notre Dame comes into the Rose Bowl with one loss and a ton of confidence, but it faces its biggest challenge to date in Nick Saban and Alabama football.

With the venue being AT&T Stadium on Friday at 3 p.m. CT, there is one Crimson Tide alumnus that remembers the show he turned in at Arlington, Texas. During the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Eve in 2015, Derrick Henry added another chapter to his incredible Heisman season. He recorded two rushing touchdowns versus Michigan State in a 38-0 win for Alabama.

For the player who swept the College Football Awards show that year, it is no surprise that Henry is taking his Alma mater to capture a College Football Playoff National Championship.

When it comes to the semifinal, he told Will Backus of the Tennessean (part of USA TODAY) that the Heisman finalists for the Tide will have gaudy numbers. This comes on the heels of Kyle Hamilton, sophomore safety for Notre Dame, stating during media availability on how his defense ‘will stop’ Najee Harris and Alabama.

“(Alabama running back) Najee (Harris) goes for five touchdowns and 200 yards,” Henry said. “(Quarterback) Mac Jones throws for 500 yards and four touchdowns, and (wide receiver) DeVonta Smith goes about 170 yards and three touchdowns.”

In the SEC Championship Game versus Florida, Jones totaled 418 passing yards with five scores, Harris had 245 total yards (178 rushing, 67 receiving) with five touchdowns, and Smith recorded 15 catches for 184 yards and two scores in a 52-46 victory for Alabama.

Henry also wants Smith to win the Heisman Trophy. The senior could become the second receiver since Desmond Howard (Michigan) in 1991 to hoist the honor. He is a consensus All-American and Associated Press Player of the Year.

Smith is the first player ever to win AP Player of the Year.

“He definitely deserves it,” Henry said. “The resume speaks for itself. … It would be cool to see him take that trophy home, be the third player from Alabama to win the Heisman. I’m excited for him.”

Through 11 games, Smith has 98 receptions for 1,511 yards and 19 total scores.

Henry became the Tide’s second Heisman winner, following a season where he collected 2,219 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns on 395 carries in 2015. Prior to Najee Harris surpassing him, Henry carried Alabama’s all-time record for career yards (3,591) and shared the touchdown record (42) with Mark Ingram. He was selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans and has become arguably the best running back in the National Football League.

Everything Spencer Rattler said after Oklahoma Cotton Bowl win - 247Sports

No. 6 Oklahoma rolled to a Cotton Bowl victory over No. 7 Florida on Wednesday night. It was the culmination of a bounce back run for the Sooners, who were 1-2 after three weeks on the season.

The first quarter of a 55-20 victory was all that was needed to set a tone for the Sooners on Wednesday night. It took just five plays to score the game’s first touchdown and only two defensive plays to pick off Florida quarterback Kyle Trask and return it for a score. Just like that, it was 14-0 in the opening minutes of the game and the first blow was delivered.

The Gators battled back and got to within four points in the second quarter, but the Sooners snapped back quickly with two more touchdowns to take a 31-13 lead to halftime. From there, it was easy coasting for Oklahoma, as it won its eighth straight game of the year, taking home the Cotton Bowl trophy.

Quarterback Spencer Rattler continued his hot streak and warranted his preseason Heisman buzz, despite not being named a finalist this year. He finished 22 of 34 passing for 272 yards, one touchdown and a rushing touchdown in the blowout. At the very least, it gives him a leg up going into next season where Oklahoma will be the Big 12 favorites once again and be a College Football Playoff contender.

Rattler spoke with the media after the game to sum up the game, look back on the season and looked ahead to 2021.

New Year's Eve in Times Square to ring in 2021 without the party crowd - Fox News

It was 1981 when Ronald Colbert, who just returned home from serving in the Navy as a Mess Specialist aboard the USS Cavalla, went to Times Square to watch the ball drop in person for the first time.

It was a lifelong dream that was fulfilled that year, and he’s been going there almost every year since.

"My younger brother and I would stay up with whoever was babysitting at the time to watch the ball drop. Everyone wore their party hats, streamers. Dancing in tiaras and tuxedos. The initial ball was just a little white -- probably as big as a bowling ball on a flagpole. Now they turned it into this electronic monstrosity," Colbert said.

"The excitement is unbelievable, the energy that everyone has during that last minute. I don't know how many people I've strangely kissed on New Year's Eve or kissed me."

Colbert had plans to visit Times Square on Dec. 31 one last time, ringing in the new year along with more than a million strangers who come together from around the world in the heart of the Big Apple to count down the last seconds of the year.

"I had already had everything planned, my Kentucky Fried Chicken in my Ziplocs and I was ready to just stay for the whole day," says Colbert, a deckhand for the Staten Island Ferry.

For the first time in 114 years, the New Year’s Eve spectacular in Times Square was held without the usual huge crowd due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

It would have marked Colbert’s 40th year partying at the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration.

"I was waiting for this to be my last year. I'll have to make it next year," he says. "It's a disappointment, but it's not a disaster."

As usual, there was a live TV broadcast for the Times Square New Year’s Eve 2020 celebration. In addition, the event was accessible via an app called VNYE, where users could also explore the virtual world of Times Square.

"We're adding a whole virtual kind of gamified version of it as well on top of [TV]. It's always been virtual in some ways," says Tim Tompkins, president of Times Square Alliance, which was one of the producers for the NYE event. "You're going to be able to create a virtual world of Times Square, create your own avatar, and then you place yourself within a virtual Time Square to experience New Year's Eve as if you were there and in real time."

CLICK HERE TO SEE NEW YEAR'S EVE CELEBRATIONS AROUND THE GLOBE

VNYE was created by Jamestown, the group that owns the building that houses the 11,875-pound New Year’s Eve ball that’s covered by 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles illuminated by 32,256 LEDs.

So far this year, there have been more than 18 million coronavirus cases and over 318,000 fatalities have been reported in the United States since February. Tompkins says staff and organizers of the New Year’s Eve event are working hard through the pandemic trying to make this event special for people watching at home as COVID-19 numbers continue to rise.

"One of the challenges is just the uncertainty with respect to the changing health situation. The people that are setting up the stages, building the stages -- they're all going to be tested. They've got to be socially distanced," he said.

The Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment recently announced that TV personality Jonathan Bennet, the host of "Holiday Wars" and an actor who starred in "Mean Girls," will be hosting this year’s event, with staged performances from artists like Jennifer Lopez, Billy Porter and Cyndi Lauper.

"Gloria Gaynor is going to sing 'I Will Survive', which is kind of a theme with 2020 both metaphorically and unfortunately, literally," Tompkins said.

People like Muhammad Ali and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor were honored at the Times Square New Year’s Eve bash in the past. But this year the many "Heroes of 2020" will be honored onsite in Times Square for their efforts on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially those who risked their lives on the job every day.

No crowds: Around the holidays this time of year, the streets of Times Square are packed with people walking shoulder-to-shoulder. This year will look a lot different without the millions of visitors.

These honorees include mass transit workers, doctors, nurses, delivery workers, first responders and other essential workers who will be staged within limited-capacity, sealed areas at a distance from other guests, performers and staff.

"We're honoring the heroes of 2020, the people who through their courage or creativity, helped us get through this year. They're all going to be New Yorkers which are going to represent people from around the world," added Tompkins.

"2020 has been something of a drain," says Colbert. "Let's hope we can return to some normality. It’s a new beginning. Let all be included."

Ryan Day on Ohio State football’s Sugar Bowl roster: ‘The plane’s a bit more full than it was a week ago’ - cleveland.com

NEW ORLEANS — Ohio State football coach Ryan Day continues to avoid specifics, but he again hinted Thursday that the Buckeyes will have more players available Friday for the Sugar Bowl against Clemson.

Ohio State played without 24 players in the Big Ten championship game victory over Northwestern on Dec. 18. Many of those players were out due to coronavirus testing protocols, though others were sidelined with injury.

ESPN’s Maria Taylor asked Day if the Buckeyes would have starters back for their College Football Playoff semifinal after Day departed the plane in New Orleans on Thursday.

“As you know there’s a protocol to come back,” Day said. “A lot of those guys are back in the protocol, and the’ve gotten stronger as the week’s gone on. But you don’t just jump onto the field after being out for an extended period of time.

“The plane’s a little bit more full than it was a week ago.”

Various OSU players are visible departing the plane behind Day in the video above. The Buckeyes touched down at 4:12 p.m. local time and bused to the Superdome for a walk-through.

Rose Bowl by the numbers: Alabama vs. Notre Dame - AL.com

Rose Bowl Game presented by Capital One

No. 1 Alabama (11-0) vs. No. 4 Notre Dame (10-1)

3 p.m. CST Friday, Jan. 1 (ESPN)

AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas

1 Player in SEC history has scored more TDs than Alabama RB Najee Harris. With 44 rushing TDs and 10 receiving TDs, Harris trails only former Florida QB Tim Tebow, who scored 57 TDs for the Gators from 2006 through 2009.

1 Current NCAA FBS coach has more career college victories than Alabama coach Nick Saban. In his 30 seasons as a college coach, Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly has a 273-95-2 record. In 25 seasons, Saban has a 259-61-1 record. Not all of Kelly’s coaching victories came at the NCAA FBS level. He had a 118-35-2 record in 13 seasons at Grand Valley State before going 19-16 at Central Michigan and 34-6 at Cincinnati. Kelly has a 102-38 record at Notre Dame. Only Knute Rockne with 105 has coached Notre Dame to more victories than Kelly.

2 Victories for Alabama in seven games against Notre Dame. The teams most recently squared off in the BCS championship game for the 2012 season, with the Crimson Tide taking a 42-14 victory on Jan. 7, 2013, in Miami. The teams’ first meeting also came with the national title at stake, and Notre Dame posted a 24-23 victory in the Sugar Bowl on Dec. 31, 1973. The teams met the next season in the Orange Bowl, with Notre Dame’s 13-11 victory on Jan. 1, 1975, accounting for the Tide’s only loss on its 1974 schedule. In regular-season games, Notre Dame won 7-0 on Nov. 15, 1980, and Alabama won 28-10 on Oct. 4, 1986, in Birmingham, and the Irish won 21-18 on Nov. 13, 1976, and 37-6 on Nov. 14, 1987, in South Bend.

2 Interceptions have been thrown by Notre Dame QB Ian Book in 314 passes this season. No other player in the nation with as many passes as Book has fewer than three interceptions in 2020. Alabama has intercepted 11 of its opponents’ 393 passes this season.

3 Consecutive Alabama games have feature at least 50 points for the Crimson Tide. Alabama became the ninth SEC team to score at least 50 points in three consecutive games by beating LSU 55-17 on Dec.5, Arkansas 52-3 on Dec. 12 and Florida 52-46 on Dec. 19. Only one SEC team has scored at least 50 points in four consecutive games. In 1945, Alabama defeated Kentucky 60-19 on Nov. 3, Vanderbilt 71-0 on Nov. 17, Pensacola Naval Air Station 55-6 on Nov. 24 and Mississippi State 55-13 on Dec. 1. The Crimson Tide completed an undefeated 1945 season by beating Southern Cal 34-14 in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1946.

4 Victories and three losses for SEC teams in the Rose Bowl. Alabama defeated Stanford 29-13 on Jan. 1, 1935; Georgia defeated UCLA 9-0 on Jan. 1, 1943; Alabama defeated Southern Cal 34-14 on Jan. 1, 1946; and Georgia defeated Oklahoma 54-48 in double overtime on Jan. 1, 2018, in the SEC’s victories. California defeated Alabama 13-0 on Jan. 1, 1938, Southern Cal defeated Tennessee 14-0 on Jan. 1, 1940, and Southern Cal defeated Tennessee 25-0 on Jan. 1, 1945, in the SEC’s losses.

4 Victories without a loss for Alabama coach Nick Saban against Notre Dame. While the coach at Michigan State, Saban faced the Fighting Irish three times, with the Spartans winning 23-7 in 1997, 45-23 in 1998 and 23-12 in 1999. Saban’s one game against Notre Dame at Alabama resulted in a 42-14 Crimson Tide victory in the BCS championship game for the 2012 season.

4 Victories without a loss at AT&T Stadium for Alabama. The Crimson Tide kicked off its season by defeating Michigan in 2012, Wisconsin in 2015 and Southern Cal in 2016 and defeated Michigan State in 2015 in the Cotton Bowl, which was serving as a semifinal game in the College Football Playoff. Alabama outscored its four ranked opponents 166-37. Notre Dame has played two games on the Dallas Cowboys’ current home field. The Fighting Irish lost to Clemson 30-3 in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 29, 2018, in a CFP semifinal game and defeated Arizona State 37-34 on Oct. 5, 2013.

9 Victories over the No. 1 team in The Associated Press Poll for Notre Dame. Notre Dame has a 9-16-1 record against the top-ranked team, with a 47-40 double-overtime victory against Clemson on Nov. 7 in their latest meeting with the No. 1 team. Alabama coach Nick Saban has a 77-8 record when leading the No. 1 team.

10.57 Yards per play have been averaged by Alabama QB Mac Jones this season, the highest figure in the nation. Jones has produced 3,730 yards on 353 rushes and passes. The SEC single-season record for yards per play (with a minimum of 300 plays) is 10.09, the average posted by Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa in 2018.

19 Victories and 19 losses for Notre Dame in bowls. The Fighting Irish’s first bowl appearance came in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1925, when, led by the Four Horsemen, Notre Dame defeated Stanford 27-10 to cap a 10-0 season. The Irish have not played in the Rose Bowl since that game.

19 Victories, 14 losses and one tie for Alabama when playing on New Year’s Day. The Crimson Tide has an overall record of 29-19-1 in January games. Notre Dame has a 9-10 record on New Year’s Day. The Fighting Irish have an overall record of 11-14 in January games.

24 Consecutive Alabama games have featured at least 30 points for the Crimson Tide, tied for the second-longest such streak in major-college football history. The most recent game in which Alabama failed to score at least 30 points was the Tide’s 44-16 loss to Clemson in the CFP national championship game on Jan. 7, 2019. The only longer streak was accomplished by UCF, which scored at least 30 points in 31 straight games starting with a 61-17 victory over Florida International on Sept. 1, 2017, and ended by a 27-24 loss to Cincinnati on Oct. 4, 2019. South Florida also reached 30 points in 24 consecutive games starting with a 44-23 victory over Temple on Nov. 14, 2015, and ended by 28-24 loss to Houston on Oct. 28, 2017.

25 Victories for Alabama coach Nick Saban against teams ranked in the top five of The Associated Press Poll, seven more than any other coach has had. Saban has a 25-14 record against top-five opponents. Bobby Bowden had 18 victories against top-five opponents during his career.

30 Victories for Notre Dame in the 34 games started by Ian Book, giving the Fighting Irish’s current signal-caller more wins than any other quarterback in school history. In Notre Dame’s career record book, Book ranks second to Brady Quinn (2003-2006) in completions, passing yards, TD passes and TD responsibility and to Tony Rice (1987-89) in QB rushing yards.

35 Victories and 17 losses for Notre Dame in games against SEC opponents. In its most recent encounter with the SEC, the Fighting Irish lost 23-17 to Georgia on Sept. 21, 2019, in South Bend. Notre Dame has a 5-4 record against SEC opponents in bowls. The Irish most recently squared off with the SEC in a bowl on Jan. 1, 2018, when they defeated LSU 21-17 in the Citrus Bowl.

42 Of Alabama’s 44 quarters this season included points for the Crimson Tide. Alabama did not score in the third quarter of its 41-0 victory over Mississippi State on Oct. 31 and the third quarter of its 52-46 victory over Florida in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 19.

56 Tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in eight games for Notre Dame LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker for the 2020 season.

71 Previous bowl appearances for Alabama. The Crimson Tide has a 42-26-3 on-the-field record in those games. Alabama is the all-time leader in bowl appearances and bowl victories.

75 Years since Alabama’s previous appearance in the Rose Bowl. The Crimson Tide’s first five bowl appearances came in the Rose Bowl, but Alabama’s ninth bowl trip was its most recent Rose Bowl appearance. Alabama has a 4-1-1 record in the Rose Bowl, with all the games on Jan. 1. The Tide defeated Washington 20-19 in 1926, tied Stanford 7-7 in 1927, defeated Washington State 24-0 in 1931, defeated Stanford 29-13 in 1935, lost to California 13-0 in 1938 and defeated Southern Cal 34-14 in 1946.

119 More points have been scored by Alabama than by its opponents in the second quarter this season. In the second period in 2020, the Crimson Tide has a 194-75 scoring advantage. Alabama has outscored its opponents 547-214 in 11 games this season. Notre Dame’s most lopsided period also has been the second quarter, when the Fighting Irish has outscored its opponents 141-52. Notre Dame has a 387-205 scoring advantage in 11 games this season.

140 Receiving yards are needed by Alabama WR DeVonta Smith to become the SEC’s career leader. Vanderbilt WR Jordan Matthews set the conference’s career mark with 3,759 receiving yards from 2010 through 2013. Smith already owns the SEC record for career TD receptions with 40. He led the nation with 98 receptions and 1,511 receiving yards entering the bowl season.

202.34 Is the passing-efficiency rating of Alabama QB Mac Jones in 2020, the best in the nation. The rating is produced using average yards gained per pass and TD, interception and completion percentages. Jones has completed 250-of-327 passes for 3,739 yards with 32 TDs and four interceptions. The NCAA FBS single-season record for passing-efficiency rating (for players with at least 250 passes) is 206.9 by Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa in 2019.

266 Consecutive games without being shut out for Alabama, a school record and the fourth-longest scoring streak in SEC history. Alabama’s most recent shutout loss came 9-0 to Auburn on Nov. 18, 2000. Notre Dame also is on a school-record scoring streak. The Fighting Irish have scored in 156 games since a 17-0 loss to Boston College on Nov. 8, 2008.

1,400 Miles is the approximate distance between Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, and AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The 107th Rose Bowl is being played in Texas this year because of COVID-19 restrictions in California. The Rose Bowl has been played outside of Pasadena once previously. The 1942 game between Oregon State and Duke was played on the Blue Devils’ home field in Durham, North Carolina, because of safety concerns involving crowds on the Pacific Coast less than one month after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.

3,639 Rushing yards for RB Najee Harris at Alabama, the most for a player in Crimson Tide history.

Derrick White is available to play against the Lakers on New Years Day - Pounding The Rock

Is this a sign that 2021 will be better? In the first bit of good news heading into the New Year for the Spurs, Derrick White is listed as available for tomorrow’s rematch against the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.

White has been out since getting injured in the Orlando Bubble and undergoing toe surgery in the offseason. As good as the Spurs youth movement has looked so far, imagining the addition of the newly-extended Derrick White to the group has been an exciting prospect, and now it’s about to become reality.

LaMarcus Aldridge remains questionable for tomorrow’s game with a sore knee, and Quinndary Weatherspoon is still out following offseason knee surgery.

Exactly one year ago today, the World Health Organization first learned of a cluster of a few dozen pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China of "unknown" origin. The cause, of course, would turn out to be the coronavirus behind the current pandemic. Here's a by-the-numbers summary of the toll the virus has taken on countries across the globe since that fateful day.

China quickly turns the corner

For the first two months of the pandemic nearly all reported cases were in China. But after a massive lockdown in Wuhan and other provinces, China quickly turned the corner. Today it has one of the world's lowest casualty figures — with less than 100,000 reported cases and less than 5,000 deaths, according to statistics maintained by Johns Hopkins University.

The U.S. is worst hit by multiple measures

Yet even as China gained control over its outbreak, the virus was spreading exponentially in countries on every continent of the planet. And nowhere has the toll been more severe than in the United States. Today the U.S. ranks highest when it comes to both its total reported case count of 19.7 million and its death toll of more than 342,000. Even when countries are ranked by reported cases as a percentage of their population, the U.S. ranks in the top five. And the U.S. also currently has the highest number of daily new reported cases and daily new deaths.

Other hard-hit nations

When considered in purely numerical terms, other hard-hit countries include India with 10.3 million reported cases, Brazil with 7.6 million, Russia with 3.1 million, France with 2.7 million, the United Kingdom with 2.4 million, Turkey with 2.2 million, Italy with 2.1 million, Spain with 1.9 million and Germany with 1.6 million. Practically all of these countries also rank in the top 10 on the number of deaths. Brazil, for instance, has had more than 193,000, India more than 148,000. And practically all are currently seeing the world's highest numbers of new reported cases and deaths.

Regional pain

Several countries that don't make it into the top 10 tallies of cases and deaths still bear mentioning. In the Americas for instance, Colombia and Argentina now have about 1.6 million reported cases a piece. Mexico, with 1.4 million, is close behind. And Mexico also has one of the world's highest death tolls — with nearly 125,000 lives lost to date. In the Middle East, Iran has fared particularly poorly — with about 1.2 million cases and more than 55,000 deaths. And while it seemed for a time that African countries might escape the brunt of the pandemic, South Africa has now seen its total case count surpass 1 million.

Outsized impact

Then there are nations where the case and death counts don't look as serious — until they are considered as a share of the population. Countries where the virus has wrought this outsized impact include the Czech Republic, Belgium, Panama and Slovenia, where the caseload per capita ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 per 100,000 people — as well as, when it comes to deaths per capita, Peru, where 116 people per 100,000 have died.

Countries that show the coronavirus can be contained

China is not the only nation that showed the coronavirus can be contained. Other standouts include South Korea, with about 60,000 cases and 900 deaths, and Vietnam, with 1,465 cases and just 35 deaths.

Green Bay Packers fear LT David Bakhtiari suffered season-ending knee injury in practice, source says - ESPN

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers have lost one of the most important members of their high-powered offense, All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari, to what is believed to be a season-ending knee injury suffered in practice on Thursday, a source told ESPN.

NFL Network reported that the injury is likely a torn ACL.

The Packers added Bakhtiari to the injury report after Thursday's practice. During the portion open to reporters, there was no apparent issue. Coach Matt LaFleur spoke before practice and will next take questions from reporters on Friday.

The Packers (12-3), who lead the NFL in scoring at 31.6 points per game, would be the NFC's No. 1 seed if they win their regular-season finale on Sunday at the Chicago Bears.

But now they'll have to do it without their best non-skill position player on offense. It comes just six weeks after they signed Bakhtiari to a record-setting, four-year, $103.5 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

The 29-year-old, who was drafted in the fourth round in 2013, has been either first- or second-team All-Pro each of the past four years. He was named a Pro Bowl starter when the selections were announced last week.

When Bakhtiari missed three games earlier this season because of broken ribs, the Packers played Billy Turner at left tackle. Turner has been a regular starter on the right side, at both guard and tackle.

Most recently, Turner has started the past four games at right guard, while Rick Wagner has started at right tackle. However, Wagner suffered a knee injury in Sunday's win over the Tennessee Titans and was a limited participant in practice.

Another option would be to move Pro Bowl left guard Elgton Jenkins to left tackle. Jenkins has played everywhere but right guard this season, having played 599 snaps at left guard, 286 at center, 31 at right tackle and 26 at left tackle, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Mississippi State, Tulsa end Armed Forces Bowl with major brawl - Fox News

A brawl broke out Thursday after the Mississippi State Bulldogs defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at the Armed Forces Bowl.

Minutes after Mississippi State edged out Tulsa, 28-26, both teams came face-to-face on the sideline and a skirmish turned into a melee.

Tulsa coach Greg Montgomery said sophomore safety Kendarin Ray was being treated for "some sort of concussion" after he was on the bottom of a pile during the scrum.

"The one thing I’ll say is our program, our guys, we’re a team that are going to stand up for each other and we’re going to battle, Montgomery said. "We talk about faith, family, football, and family’s going to take care of family. We’re a team that has battled all year long. We battled again today. From that standpoint, our guys are going to continue to protect each other and go from there,"

Mississippi State coach Mike Leach said he was unsure what triggered the melee.

"I’m not sure what exactly caused that," he said. "It was something before the game, too. We’ve never had any problem with that the entire season, so I can only guess without seeing the film."

Tulsa was trying for a late onside kick to make a comeback. But the team was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which may have fueled the hot tempers.

Mississippi State freshman Will Rogers threw a touchdown pass and rushed for one more in the win. Bulldogs defensive back Emmanuel Forbes returned a touchdown 90 yards.

Lakers’ Wes Matthews enjoys breakthrough night as he adapts to bench role - OCRegister

LeBron James said it best this fall: “What I’ve learned being a Laker is that the Laker faithful don’t give a damn what you’ve done before … until you become a Laker, you’ve got to do it with them, as well.”

In that sense, the 1,663 3-point baskets Wesley Matthews has made in his career mattered little to the fans of his new team before the six he hit in a row on Wednesday night. But Lakers fans should remember: The fact that Matthews has hit as many as 10 3-pointers in a game in his career matters to him. When he started the season a shooting slump, the 34-year-old’s experience was what kept his confidence burning.

“I feel like I can get hot,” he said. “I feel like I should make every shot that I shoot, so I won’t say it’s unusual.”

It took five games and an 0-for-8 start, but Matthews finally delivered in a win against the San Antonio Spurs. The learning curve has been steep for everyone with a shortened preseason, and by comparison to his teammates who have already turned in good games, Matthews seemed to face the steepest one, not finding his shot on offense and looking slow-footed on defense where he was expected to be one of the surest pieces.

But in his 18-point performance, Matthews showed a little more of what the Lakers expected when they signed him this offseason – and maybe a few things they didn’t. Matthews was the hottest shooter on the floor at times on Wednesday night, including shot-fake stepback jumpers that zipped through the net.

“We don’t worry about Wes: We know what he’s done throughout his career,” Coach Frank Vogel said. “He’s a knockdown shooter and a great defender. Just excited that he’s in a Lakers uniform and what kind of things he’s gonna give us throughout the year.”

What contributed to the slow start? Consider Matthews’ new role: In a career that spans 796 games, Matthews has started 729 of them. In the past eight seasons, he’s only come off the bench twice, and now he’s averaging eight fewer minutes per game than even last season while coming off the bench every game.

It’s hard to explain just how significant starting is to NBA players, especially those who have started before, but that desire to start has already had a profound impact on the Lakers this season. Dennis Schröder voiced how he wanted to move “forward” by returning to the starting lineup after two seasons off the bench in Oklahoma City. Kyle Kuzma has talked before about how he would be a starter on most other teams in the league, and even though the Lakers envision him as a sixth man, he’ll also be elevated into starting whenever James or Anthony Davis miss games.

The wing balance between Schröder and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as well as the desire to start a true center bumped Matthews from the role he’s had for most of his 12 seasons in the NBA. And as genial as Matthews is, he acknowledged it’s been a tough adjustment.

“It’s just a different kind of way to get yourself mentally psyched, different kind of way to get engaged into the game. And obviously this is a new group, a new style of play, and just an odd season, just an odd offseason. So nothing was really able to be any kind of resemblance of normal.”

What’s helped, Matthews said, is support. He’s picked up tips from Markieff Morris, a former NBA starter who has transitioned comfortably to his bench role with the Lakers. Whereas starters get their energy from being on the court from the opening tip-off, reserves have to self-generate the same level of intensity and focus, which can be a tricky thing while watching from the bench.

“‘Kieff is one of the guys who has really been, I would say, instrumental in my comfort,” Matthews said. “I started to take a little bit of what he does to try to get ready when my number is called to try to check in the game, which is something that’s different for me. But like I said, you gotta be able to adapt.”

As a chemistry piece, Matthews has already adapted quickly. Schröder said he has been one of the players who helped build chemistry among the newcomers, along with center Marc Gasol.

It makes sense that a veteran with Matthews’ experience would be able to find his fit in the locker room. The Lakers hope they’re seeing just the start of Matthews finding his fit on the court as well.

“We can’t control that the ball goes in the basket and we’ve told him, keep shooting it,” Schröder said. “And that’s what’s so great about this group. Everybody tries to build each other up. … Everybody in this locker room is excited for him and we can’t wait for him to get it going.”

Preparing for a new year, many have a message for the old one: good riddance. - The New York Times

Last New Year’s Eve, a million strong crowd flooded Midtown Manhattan, kissing and cheering in the warm glow of 2020’s promise. This New Year’s Eve, just a few hundred will gather in Times Square — dozens of frontline workers among them — and only then by special invitation.

With temperatures checked and face masks secured, they will represent a nation holding a mirror to the lips of 2020 to confirm that there is no fogging, that the year has mercifully ceased to be.

But here is an existential question to ponder over your Trader Joe’s hors d’oeuvres and drink of choice: If a ball drops at midnight in Times Square and almost no one is present to see it, has a new year truly begun?

We have been conditioned to believe that with a clock’s tick on one particular midnight, a bent old man hands the baton of time to a sprightly cherub in a top hat. All the travails of 12 months end, and life begins anew.

If only.

“I’m more looking forward to burying 2020 than looking forward to 2021,” said Stephen Hughes, an assistant chief with the New York Police Department who is helping to supervise the night. “I just can’t wait not to see 2020 anymore.”

Juanita Erb, a clinical research nurse invited to attend this year’s Times Square celebration, agreed. But, she added: “The changing of the clock into 2021 is not going to make everything go away.”

But it is the pandemic that defined the year, with more than 340,000 coronavirus-related deaths in the country — an average of 930 every day, 39 every hour. And while the year also included the lightning-quick development of vaccines, most Americans will not be inoculated until well into 2021, meaning that deadly infections will continue.

At the Times Square gathering, the night’s touch of grace is in the invitation to a few dozen frontline workers and their families. Among them will be Ms. Erb, 44, a clinical research nurse who, for the last several months, has helped oversee trials for the Pfizer vaccine at the N.Y.U. Langone Vaccine Center.

Another of the invited guests is Danny Haro, 22, a community college student from Montclair, N.J., who delivers food for an Italian restaurant and provides security for a clothing store. He is among the unheralded whose work allows others to experience vague normality in a pandemic.

As the coronavirus crisis raged in early spring, the Villa Victoria Pizzeria in Montclair began donating pasta and salads to workers at nearby Mountainside Hospital, with Mr. Haro often delivering the food in his 2009 Ford Escape.

In early April, he tested positive for the virus. There came the fevers, the chest pains, the loss of smell — the long nights fearing he couldn’t breathe.

Mr. Haro is feeling much better now, and he says he expects 2021 to look a lot like 2020, at least in the beginning. He wishes, then, for one thing.

“Strength,” Mr. Haro said. “Just strength, honestly.”

NFL Week 17 game picks: Browns end playoff drought; Washington Football Team wins NFC East - NFL.com

Gregg Rosenthal went 10-6 on his predictions for Week 16 of the 2020 NFL season, bringing his total record to 151-87-1. How will he fare in Week 17? His picks are below.

Sunday, Jan. 3

New York Giants 23, Dallas Cowboys 22

The last time these teams met, Dak Prescott was lost for the season as the Giants fell to 0-5. Who would have guessed they'd both be alive for the NFC East title 12 weeks later? Andy Dalton's quick decision making has made the Cowboys' offensive line look better and Dallas' defense is amazingly now ranked ahead of the slumping Big Blue group in DVOA. Despite all that, I stubbornly believe this Giants squad is made of tougher material than the Cowboys, an organization that's made a habit of coming up short down the stretch.

New England Patriots 20, New York Jets 17

The Jets are 2-13 and basically a coin flip to win in Week 17 against the Patriots. Normally, that would mean New England is resting starters. Now it's a sign the Pats are one of the worst teams in football. As the final Christmas present to my son, Walker, I let him pick this score.

Cleveland Browns 24, Pittsburgh Steelers 17

The Steelers are resting Ben Roethlisberger and are expected to sit other key veterans. It's not like Pittsburgh was firing on many cylinders before the second half of its crucial comeback win over the Colts, either. Then again, the Browns' COVID-related issues raise questions about their players' availability that might not be answered until Sunday. This shapes up as an anticlimactic end to Cleveland's playoff drought, but the Fighting Stefanskis have earned their way to the Wild Card Round.

Miami Dolphins 27, Buffalo Bills 21

Picking games in Week 17 adds an added layer of confusion, with strategy about resting starters more important than any other factor. After Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced Ben Roethlisberger will sit out on Sunday, perhaps the pressure is off Buffalo to play Josh Allen to clinch the No. 2 seed. Cole Beasley's fourth-quarter injury in a 38-9 game Monday night was also a reminder of the stakes for the Bills. (In short: I expect to see plenty of Matt Barkley.)

Seattle Seahawks 33, San Francisco 49ers 14

Pete Carroll confirmed that the Seahawks, with a small chance to clinch the first-round bye, are playing their starters. The 49ers, meanwhile, will be missing their starters for the 16th straight game, with left tackle Trent Williams and wideout Brandon Aiyuk recently added to the list of players ruled out for Sunday. Russell Wilson might get rest after all because the Seahawks are ahead by so much.

Los Angeles Rams 21, Arizona Cardinals 17

Without Jared Goff and Cooper Kupp, a win this week would be one of Sean McVay's finest hours. (That's especially true if McVay is getting credit for hiring breakout defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.) I don't trust this narcoleptic Cardinals offense against the best defense in the league. Rams fill-in starting quarterback John Wolford showed more friskiness in the 2019 preseason and 2019 AAF season than people realize. QB Gofftroversy ahoy?!

Indianapolis Colts 33, Jacksonville Jaguars 20

This matchup sets up well for the Colts, despite their Week 1 loss to the Jaguars. However, the Week 17 slate does not set up well for Indy. With the Bills and Steelers having little to play for, it's easy to imagine five AFC teams finishing 11-5 with only four playoff spots to go around. The Colts would then be left out in the cold.

Las Vegas Raiders 28, Denver Broncos 24

Finishing 8-8 would constitute a small dose of progress for the beleaguered Raiders, while Drew Lock's propensity for throwing passes up for grabs could make this his final start in a Broncos uniform.

Green Bay Packers 31, Chicago Bears 20

Riding a three-game win streak, Chicago's back in the playoff picture. But I'm not convinced Mitchell Trubisky played particularly well in two of the Bears' last four games (vs. Detroit in Week 13 and Jacksonville in Week 16) against some of the NFL's worst defenses. Sunday represents a step up in class, especially if Chicago's playing from behind against a Packers team hungry to clinch home-field advantage in the NFC. The Bears will be scoreboard-watching, rooting for the Rams to beat the Cardinals, because backing into the playoffs (an Arizona loss would allow Chicago to clinch a spot even if Green Bay wins) is their best route to getting there.

New Orleans Saints 27, Carolina Panthers 17

Matt Rhule has helped four offensive players top 900 yards from scrimmage this season, and none of them are named Christian McCaffrey. That's a sign this Panthers offense has overachieved, but it hasn't looked as crisp down the stretch. The Saints' lines on both sides of the ball should be able to control this game, even if Drew Brees doesn't play all four quarters.

UK enters 'new chapter' outside European Union as Brexit transition period ends - CNN

The end of the transition period, four-and-a-half years after a majority in the UK voted to quit the European Union, is a significant moment in the nation's history. After almost five decades as part of the bloc, the UK will now forge a separate path.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Thursday that Britain will be an "open, generous, outward-looking, internationalist and free trading" country that is "free to do things differently, and if necessary better" than the EU.
"We have our freedom in our hands and it is up to us to make the most of it," Johnson said during his New Year's address, just hours before the end of the transition period.
The divorce has been a painful, drawn-out process. And despite the post-Brexit trade deal agreed by the UK and EU in the closing days of the year, and voted through by British lawmakers on the eve of the December 31 deadline, much uncertainty lies ahead.
Opening the debate on the bill Wednesday, Johnson told members of Parliament that the deal would "open a new chapter" and allow the UK to take "control of our laws and our national destiny."
"This bill, it embodies our vision -- shared with our European neighbors -- of a new relationship between Britain and the EU as sovereign equals, joined by friendship, commerce, history, interests and values, while respecting one another's freedom of action and recognizing that we have nothing to fear if we sometimes choose to do things differently," Johnson said.
A picture shows the signature of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the UK and the EU at 10 Downing Street in London on December 30.
But critics warn that the UK economy will suffer as a result of Brexit, with many businesses unprepared for the changes ahead, particularly coming as the nation staggers under the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Now the UK has left the single market and customs union, goods crossing the border will be subject to customs and other checks. Delays and disruption could occur as hauliers discover they lack the correct paperwork, or that new software systems collapse under pressure.
Keir Starmer, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, last week warned that "there are serious questions about the government's preparedness for the new arrangements" after the negotiations went down to the wire.
He told Labour lawmakers to support the bill rather than risk the "devastating" consequences of the UK crashing out of the EU with no trade deal. But Starmer said the "thin agreement" reached by Johnson's government "does not provide adequate protection for British manufacturing, our financial services, creative industries, or workplace rights."
Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said in a tweet, sent as the clock struck 11 p.m. UK time, that Scotland will be "back soon, Europe." Scots voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU in the 2016 referendum and Brexit has injected new energy into the fight for Scottish independence.
The EU-UK trade deal did not cover Gibraltar, the Overseas British Territory that lies on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula.
Only hours before the transition deadline expired Thursday, Spain and the UK announced that a separate draft agreement had been reached on its post-Brexit status.

'Time to put Brexit behind us'

The UK-EU trade deal has already received provisional approval from the European Union, with both European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel formally signing off on the agreement on Wednesday.
"It has been a long road. It's time now to put Brexit behind us," von der Leyen said on Twitter, announcing the move. "Our future is made in Europe."
The European Parliament is expected to examine the deal at a later date before it can be formally ratified by the European Union.
The deal agreed with Brussels sets out a new business and security relationship with the UK's biggest trading partner. It was finally nailed down after months of deadlock over areas such as fishing quotas, how the UK would use state aid to support British businesses post-Brexit, and legal oversight of any deal struck.
The agreement, which preserves Britain's tariff- and quota-free access to the bloc's consumers, spares the UK some of the most dire potential consequences from Brexit as it battles a crippling pandemic.
But while it may have prevented a crippling blow to Britain's ailing economy, the trade agreement will still leave the country poorer at a time when it faces a jobs crisis and the worst recession in more than 300 years.
The deal also appears to mostly cover trade in goods, where the UK has a deficit with its EU neighbors, but excludes key service industries like finance, where it currently enjoys a surplus.

Muted celebrations

Some UK newspaper front pages sounded a triumphal note Thursday despite the potentially rocky road ahead.
"Britain FINALLY free from the EU" said the Daily Express, while The Times of London declared "It's goodbye to all that as Brexit trade deal signed."
The Daily Mail hailed "two giant leaps to freedom," in a headline referencing both the signing into law of the Brexit trade deal and UK regulators' approval of the Oxford/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine a day earlier.
But soaring rates of coronavirus infections may put paid to any Brexit supporters' hopes of celebrating the end of the transition period on Britain's streets.
More than three-quarters of England's population are now under the country's toughest restrictions, aimed at limiting the spread of a new, more contagious coronavirus variant.
News of that variant prompted France, along with other nations in Europe elsewhere, to shut off travel from the UK. As thousands of trucks were stranded at the British port of Dover in the run-up to Christmas, some observers feared it also foreshadowed the potential chaos of a no-deal Brexit.
Meanwhile, the full impact of Brexit on Britons living in the EU, as well as EU citizens living in Britain, remains to be seen. The 3 Million, a grassroots organization of EU citizens in the UK, has highlighted concerns over those who do not realize they must apply to the EU Settlement Scheme by the end of June to protect their UK rights.

Gibraltar agreement

The agreement in principle struck between London and Madrid will avoid a hard border between Gibraltar and Spain, Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya told a televised press conference Thursday.
This was something many local residents, on both sides of the border, had feared as the transition period ends, she said.
Gonzalez Laya said an interim period was expected for six months until a new treaty is finalized. Unlike the rest of the UK, Gibraltar will remain a part of EU agreements, such as the Schengen area, allowing a free flow of people and goods across members' borders.
"Spain will be ultimately responsible for the application of Schengen in Gibraltar," Gonzalez Laya said.
UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the UK had a "warm and strong relationship with Spain."
"Today, working side by side with the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, and following intensive discussions with the Spanish government, we reached agreement on a political framework to form the basis of a separate treaty between the UK and the EU regarding Gibraltar. We will now send this to the European Commission, in order to initiate negotiations on the formal treaty," he said.
"In the meantime, all sides are committed to mitigating the effects of the end of the transition period on Gibraltar, and in particular ensure border fluidity, which is clearly in the best interests of the people living on both sides."
