Carson Wentz's Hail Mary touchdown pass in garbage time results in bad beat in Seahawks win over Eagles - CBS Sports

Fans who bet on the Seahawks to cover their 6.5-point spread (via William Hill Sportsbook) on Monday night had to be feeling good after Jason Myers' third field goal gave Seattle a 23-9 lead over the Eagles with 1:14 left. The Eagles' offense, after all, had struggled to move the ball up until that point in the game, as Philadelphia quarterback Carson Wentz had thrown for just 157 yards on 41 attempts during the game's first 58 minutes and 46 seconds.

But after Boston Scott returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards, Wentz moved the Eagles to the Seahawks' 33-yard-line with 12 seconds left. From there, Wentz's Hail Mary was caught by tight end Richard Rodgers, who cut the Eagles' deficit to eight points. The Eagles then beat the spread after Miles Sanders scored on the ensuing two-point try.

While fans who picked the Seahawks to cover the spread were surely disappointed, fans who picked the two teams to score under 49 points were rewarded after the two teams combined to score just 40 points in a game that largely dominated by defense. Both teams struggled to run the ball, as the Seahawks averaged just 2.53 yards per carry for the night.

The game's best offensive performance belonged to receiver D.K. Metcalf, who finished the game with 10 receptions for 177 yards on 13 targets. In the process, Metcalf moved passed Darrell Jackson into second place in Seahawks' history for the most yards by a receiver during his first two seasons. Metcalf, who has amassed 1,939 yards for his career, is just 87 away from passing Joey Galloway for the franchise record.

Tom Herman is leaving Texas officials no choice but to pursue Urban Meyer - The Dallas Morning News

The notion that only a record-setting expenditure — buying out Tom Herman and hiring Urban Meyer — can save football at the University of Texas raises at least one important question. What exactly is Longhorn football supposed to be?

I know what fans think the answer is, but I’m wondering why that doesn’t match the school’s track record. Given that the university’s 1963 and 1969 pre-integration championships are not terribly relevant today, let’s just look at the last half-century. That’s history enough, isn’t it?

And in that 50-year period, Texas has won as many national championships as Colorado and Tennessee.

So when we talk about what Texas should be able to accomplish with its resources and nation-leading revenues and access to great in-state talent, are we missing the boat? The fact is that the period Mack Brown produced from 2004 through 2009 (a 69-9 record, a national title, two national championship appearances) is the aberration. And yet people want it to be the standard.

Now none of that is to suggest Herman should keep his job after a fourth season on campus. The standard that he has set can’t produce more than a slogan that reads “Better than Charlie Strong.”

And Herman came up way short Monday in his Zoom news conference when he said the standard at UT should be as follows: “Be in the conversation, competing for conference championships in November and December. We were there two years ago, and this year we came up three points short.’'

Somehow I think not being eliminated from the Big 12 title game until late November is marginalizing the goal for a $6 million coach.

Strong had three consecutive losing seasons after replacing Brown, and Herman at his worst has done better than that. Still, a 30-18 overall record and 21-13 in the Big 12 is far from special.

I have been accused of writing nothing but negative things about my alma mater, so let’s inject some pure positive here. If Texas can win its last two games against Kansas State and Kansas, this will be the first time the school hasn’t lost at least four games in a season since Brown’s national title loss to Alabama in 2009.

Technically, I suppose the Longhorns would have to win a bowl as well, and I can’t say I’ve dug in too deeply on where a 7-3 Texas team might be dispatched in this awkward college season. But three conference losses are just the tip of the problem to many.

In a Twitter poll I posted Monday morning on Herman’s biggest loss in 2020, none of the individual defeats to Oklahoma, Iowa State and TCU gained as many votes as the loss of Southlake quarterback Quinn Ewers (43% of the vote). Ewers decommitted from UT earlier this season and has since cast his lot with — who else — Ohio State.

Herman on how recruiting is going: “Those that are committed and those that will be committed understand that we are on our way.’'

I think the fact Herman refused all questions about his future tells us more about “the way’' things are going in Austin. But the protracted length of this school’s slump since its last national title game appearance is still the inexplicable part of the Texas story to me. Even losing to Alabama, a six-year run that included two Rose Bowl wins (one over USC for the No. 1 ranking), a Fiesta Bowl victory and 69 wins overall should have provided the springboard to extended greatness for this team.

Instead, for over a decade, the Longhorns have not managed anything better than Herman’s 10-4 “we’re baaack’' season of 2018. Rather pitiful.

There’s nothing to suggest there’s a better solution than Meyer. I don’t know how valid his health scares remain — the ones that caused him to leave Florida and Ohio State while still riding high in the polls — but if he wants the job, history says he will produce. He won national championships in two places and perhaps did his best work prior that at Utah, so the man can win anywhere.

And if Meyer wants anyone to make the argument he’s as good a coach for this era as Nick Saban, winning titles at three schools would at least one-up Saban in that department even if he can’t match Nick’s total of six at LSU and Alabama.

People have mentioned the baggage that comes with Meyer. But I think the players’ arrest totals at Florida were far more significant than his overly staunch defense of one assistant coach with serious domestic issues at Ohio State. At least Zach Smith seems to have focused his anger management issues on Herman these days on Twitter.

All I know is that athletic director Chris Del Conte better have the money trucks lined up and everything in place to make this move. Longhorns fans who want Herman out will be greatly disappointed if the answer is anything less than someone who has shown he has the treasure map in his back pocket. A young coach with promise seems like something that has been tried and found sorely lacking in Austin.

NFL bad beat: Eagles go for 2-point conversion and it costs bettor who had $500,000 on Seahawks -6.5 - Yahoo Sports

If you had any bet on the Seattle Seahawks at -6.5, even if it was just $20, you were tilting your face off at the end of Monday night’s game.

Imagine having $500,000 on the Seahawks at -6.5.

There was a really, really tough bad beat on Monday night when the Eagles caught a Hail Mary and then went for 2 when most would have just kicked the extra point. When the Eagles got into the end zone for 2, it was a ridiculous beat for Seahawks backers, and there were many of them. It had to be a happy play for sportsbooks. BetMGM saw almost 90 percent of bets come in on Seattle before kickoff. Many of those bets came when the Seahawks were -5 or -5.5, but there were plenty of tickets with -6 or -6.5 printed on them.

One bettor had a swing of more than $950,000 on the 2-point conversion. Someone at BetMGM wagered $500,000 to win $454,545 on the Seahawks -6.5.

That bettor will never forget the final few seconds of Monday night’s game.

The Eagles scored on a weird lob pass that was batted back to Richard Rodgers, who made a great catch for the touchdown with 12 seconds left. No big deal. The Eagles would kick the extra point to cut it to 7 points with the extra point and ... wait, the Eagles are going for 2?

Doug Pederson has some odd views on when to go for 2. He’s aggressive with it, let’s say. And now all of a sudden, what looked like a lock on a half-million-dollar wager was coming down to a meaningless conversion.

The Eagles handed to Miles Sanders, who ran past a disinterested Seattle defense. That score cut Seattle’s lead to 6, and it meant that the Eagles were covering the 6.5-point spread. Seattle then recovered the onside kick and the game was over.

Seattle 23, Philadelphia 17. All Seattle -6.5 tickets could be torn up.

Including one for $500,000.

New Zealand joins Australia in denouncing China's tweet - Associated Press

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand has joined Australia in denouncing a graphic tweet posted by a Chinese official that shows a fake image of a grinning Australian soldier holding a bloodied knife to a child’s throat.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Tuesday that New Zealand has voiced its concerns directly with Chinese authorities.

“This is an image that wasn’t factual. It wasn’t correct. And so in keeping with our principled position where images like that are used, we will raise those concerns and we’ll do it directly,” Ardern told reporters.

China has not backed down from the tweet and said there will be no apology.

Ardern’s criticism was more muted than Australia’s. She faced an awkward choice of how far to get involved in a conflict between New Zealand’s closest ally, Australia, and its biggest trading partner, China.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Monday called the image “repugnant” and demanded an apology from the Chinese government. The post took aim at alleged abuses by Australian soldiers during the conflict in Afghanistan.

The incident is further souring already tense relations between Australia and China.

The image, which appeared to show the soldier slitting the child’s throat, was posted by Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry. He wrote a caption with his tweet: “Shocked by murder of Afghan civilians & prisoners by Australian soldiers. We strongly condemn such acts, & call for holding them accountable.”

He was referring to a disturbing report by Australia’s military earlier this month which found evidence that elite Australian troops unlawfully killed 39 Afghan prisoners, farmers and civilians during the Afghanistan conflict. The report recommended that 19 soldiers be referred to federal police for criminal investigation.

Asked about the issue at a daily briefing, foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying cast blame on the Australian side.

“What Australia should do is to reflect deeply, bring the perpetrators to justice, make a formal apology to the Afghan people, and solemnly promise to the international community that they will never commit such terrible crimes again,” Hua said.

Morrison said Zhao’s tweet was “utterly outrageous” and a terrible slur against Australia’s military.

It “is truly repugnant. It is deeply offensive to every Australian, every Australian who has served in that uniform,” he told reporters in Canberra. “The Chinese government should be totally ashamed of this post. It diminishes them in the world’s eyes.”

Morrison said his government contacted Twitter asking it to take the post down. The post had a warning tag on it on Tuesday but could still be viewed. Zhao’s account comes with a Twitter label stating that it’s a Chinese government account.

Despite China blocking Twitter and other U.S. social media platforms within the county, Chinese diplomats and state media have established a strong presence on them.

Zhao was criticized by the U.S. in March after tweeting a conspiracy theory that U.S. soldiers may have brought the coronavirus to China. He is considered a leading representative of China’s high-pitched new strain of assertive foreign relations.

Morrison acknowledged there were tensions between China and Australia.

“But this is not how you deal with them,” he said. “Australia has patiently sought to address the tensions that exist in our relationship in a mature way, in a responsible way, by seeking engagement at both leader and ministerial level.”

The rift between the two nations has grown since the Australian government called for an independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic. China has since imposed tariffs and other restrictions on a number of Australian exports.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football crew rips Eagles GM Howie Roseman - NJ.com

The amazing thing was that it took the ESPN Monday Night Football crew more than a quarter to address the dumpster fire in green uniforms, with the rip job likely brought on by a ridiculous Jalen Hurts yo-yo.

Hurts, the Eagles backup quarterback inserted as a solo act for the first time this season, completed a pass to wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey in the second quarter, only to be yanked for the next play.

Hurts then watched from the sideline as Carson Wentz was sacked by the Seattle Seahawks -- as every Eagles fan screamed at their TVs, laptops, tablets and phones. This offensive ineptitude -- and the inability after months to devise a plan for Hurts -- is what they’ve been watching for 11 games.

That silly series seemed to light the fuse. When the broadcast returned from a commercial break a few minutes later, analysts Louis Riddick and Brian Griese were ready. And with the camera trained on general manager Howie Roseman as he stood masked-up in a box above Lincoln Financial Field, they went off.

Riddick, the former front-office exec, explained the cap problems presented by Wentz’s contract, which, play-by-play guy Steve Levy pointed out, was the front office’s fault. Griese, the former quarterback, then threw a stink bomb into Roseman’s office for not, well, helping the struggling quarterback.

“There’s a lot of money that’s been invested in Carson Wentz,” Riddick said. “A lot of money was guaranteed to him at signing. With the 2021 salary cap expected to go down, it would be very cost prohibitive for him to be cut after the 2020 season. … Carson Wentz will be here. They don’t want to pull the plug on him, they want to get him playing better. They need to get more people around him.”

Griese, however, went for Roseman’s jugular.

“They’ve got to get more players around him,” he said. “They’ve got to get more protection up front. This was the best offensive line in football when they won the Super Bowl (in the 2017 season). Well, (tackle) Lane Johnson is hurt. He’s not the same guy. Neither is (tackle) Jason Peters. (Guard) Brandon Brooks has been hurt.

“They haven’t drafted a wide receiver that’s contributed. They drafted three wide receivers, (GM) Howie Roseman did, this off-season, and none of them has contributed in any meaningful way. So, they have got to be better in the front office. They’ve got to find more talent, so this offense can be built around Carson Wentz.”

The Eagles, with a Wentz TD pass to tight end Dallas Goedert late in the second quarter, trailed 14-6 at halftime, despite having only 74 yards of offense. Wentz was 7-for-17 for 30 yards. In 10 plays in the first quarter, the Eagles had minus-4 yards of offense.

Romain Grosjean's wife pays emotional tribute with 'superhero' F1 driver set to leave hospital - Daily Mail

'It didn't take one miracle but several': Romain Grosjean's wife pays emotional tribute with 'superhero' F1 driver set to leave hospital after escaping with minor burns from fireball smash which melted his visor

  • Romain Grosjean's helmet visor melted as he sat in his burning car on Sunday
  • The Frenchman's car burst into flames as it smashed into a barrier in Bahrain
  • It split in half and he was lucky to be pulled from wreckage with minor injuries
  • Grosjean posted a video message from his hospital bed, praising the car's halo

Romain Grosjean's wife wrote an emotional statement on Instagram on Monday saluting her husband for scrambling out of his fireball car during the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday.

The driver’s car snapped in half and went up in flames after the first-lap accident that stunned the sporting world.

Wife Marion, a French TV personality who saw the drama unfold at their home in Geneva, wrote: ‘Thank you to our children, who pushed him to pull himself out of the fire.’

The pair, who married in 2012, have two boys and a girl, Sacha (7), Simon (5) and Camille (2).

Marion paid tribute to the rescuers and well-wishers, adding: ‘Thank you to Romain’s courage, his determination, his strength, his love, his physical training that kept him alive. It didn’t take one miracle but several.’

The 34-year-old Frenchman — hailed as a ‘superhero’ by Marion — escaped from his burning car after piercing the safety barriers at 140mph with little more than burns to the top of both hands.

Ian Roberts, the British medical delegate who was quickly on the scene, said: ‘He was very shaky and his visor was completely opaque and melted. I had to get it off just to check everything was OK.

‘He had some pain on his foot and hands so from that point we knew it was safe enough to move him into the (medical) car, get some gel on his burns then get him into the ambulance and off to the medical centre.’

Grosjean was kept in hospital for a second night but is likely to be discharged on Tuesday. Pietro Fittipaldi, grandson of double world champion Emerson, will fill the drive in his place at the Sakhir Grand Prix, a second successive race in Bahrain but this time staged on a different configuration.

The FIA have opened their investigation into the incident, with race director Michael Masi saying there will be ‘no knee-jerk’ safety changes in the interim.

Paris police officers under investigation after video of beating spurs outrage - CBS News

Four Paris police officers have been handed preliminary charges over the beating of a Black music producer, after security footage of the incident was posted online.

The video shows three of the officers shove Michel Zecler inside his music studio, then punch, kick and hit him repeatedly with a truncheon for several minutes.  As they leave, a fourth officer throws a tear gas canister through the door.

Zecler, 41, said they also hurled racist insults at him, although the police deny that.

He said he was scared, afraid for his life. "I didn't do anything to deserve that," he said.

The video prompted outrage in France to the highest levels. French president Emmanuel Macron said the images were "shameful." Posting on Facebook, he denounced what he called an "unacceptable attack."

Preliminary charges have been filed against the three officers caught on tape for intentional violence in a group, with a weapon. The fourth officer, accused of throwing the tear gas, is under investigation for intentional violence. Two have been remanded in custody, while the other two were given conditional release.

During a press conference Sunday, Paris prosecutor RĂ©my Heitz said the officers seen in the video said they had panicked, but admitted that their blows were "not justified and they had mainly acted out of fear."

The police officers said they had approached Zecler because he was not wearing a mask. Heitz said they also smelled cannabis, but a search of his bag revealed only half a gram of the drug.

The video came to light as there are growing concerns in France that public trust in the police is being eroded.

Last week, the Paris police chief announced an internal investigation into officers accused of violence as they cleared an illegal refugee camp in the city center November 23.

The Zecler incident also again raised fears that a new law to restrict the right to publish or broadcast images of some police operations could be used to cover up alleged wrongdoing.

Article 24 of that law provoked accusations that the government was trampling on press freedom. Journalists asserted that it would make it difficult to report on police activities, and almost impossible to broadcast live on police operations.

Police unions defended the article, saying their members are often filmed up close with smartphones by people who then post the video or photos on social media, with the names of the officers, and sometimes the names and addresses of their families and even where their children go to school.

Protests against the law last Saturday in central Paris degenerated into violence. Rioters torched vehicles, vandalized shops and hurled stones and firecrackers at police, who responded by charging some of the crowd and firing tear gas.

paris-protest.jpg

Among those hurt in the clashes was Syrian photojournalist Ameer Alhalbi, now based in Paris, who said it was like being in Aleppo.

On Monday, lawmakers announced they were suspending the controversial article, promising it would be completely rewritten.

Press freedom watch body RSF-Reporters Without Borders responded that it wasn't enough to rewrite Article 24, but that the article should be scrapped entirely.

Christophe Deloire, secretary-general of RSF, also called on the government to "put concrete measures in place to bring an end to police violence against journalists covering demonstrations."

Steelers-Ravens game reportedly moved to Wednesday afternoon because of this reason - Fox News

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens matchup that was rescheduled for Wednesday was bumped up to the afternoon because there were major priorities happening in primetime.

The Steelers and Ravens will play the final Week 12 game at 3:40 p.m. ET if everything goes according to plan. ESPN reported that the game couldn’t have been played in primetime because NBC is airing the Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting in New York City at night.

RAVENS-STEELERS POSTPONED TO WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

It appeared to be another snag in the already chaotic rescheduling of the game, which was originally set to be played on Thanksgiving Day, moved to Tuesday night and then to Wednesday because of both teams’ issues with the coronavirus.

“These decisions were made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the health and safety of players, coaches and game day personnel and in consultation with medical experts,” the league said in a statement Monday.

The Steelers’ Week 13 game against the Washington Football Team was moved to Dec. 7 and the Ravens’ Week 13 game against the Dallas Cowboys was moved from this coming Thursday to Dec. 8.

JUJU SMITH-SCHUSTER, MARLON HUMPHREY HAVE AN IDEA ON HOW TO PLAY STEELERS-RAVENS GAME

Baltimore said in a statement that the team held a walkthrough at their facility. They did not enter the locker room or the training room. The team will travel to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

The Ravens had two more members of their team test positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, including Pro Bowl tight end and Type 1 diabetic Mark Andrews, ESPN reported on Sunday. That brought the team’s total to at least 11 players and 10 staff members who have recently contracted the virus. Twenty players total have been added to the reserve/COVID list in recent days.

The Steelers have been dealing with COVID problems as well. Running back James Conner was among the Steelers personnel who tested positive for the virus.

Texans WR Will Fuller announces six-game suspension for violating NFL PED policy - NFL.com

A suspension has ended Will Fuller's 2020 season.

The Texans receiver has been suspended six games by the NFL for a violation of the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. Fuller announced his suspension via Instagram, explaining he'd taken a medication he believed was permitted by the league's policy, but later learned it was not. Later Monday, Texans cornerback Bradley Roby announced he too had been suspended for six games and his season was over.

Fuller will miss the Texans' remaining five games this season, plus one more in 2021, as will Roby.

"As a result of this mistake, I have been suspended for six games for taking this prohibited medication," Fuller wrote in his post. "I want to sincerely apologize to the Texans organization and all of my fans for this mistake. I am looking forward to putting this all behind me and returning better than ever in 2021."

Fuller was in the midst of a career year, catching 53 passes for 879 yards and a career-high eight touchdowns through 11 games as part of a Texans offense that was increasingly reliant upon the passing game. He'd taken advantage of such a shift, as evidenced by his production, but it'll end there with this suspension.

It might also conclude his time in Houston. Fuller is in the last year of his rookie deal, and while he was finally nearing the expectation a team has of a first-round pick, his recurring injury issues and this suspension might spell an end to his Texans career.

The good news for Fuller: this suspension won't keep him from attracting offers elsewhere. The pace to break 1,000 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns should earn him a nice payday elsewhere, if necessary -- even if he'll only be able to play 15 of the first 16 games.

Roby has started 10 games for the Texans with 37 tackles, an interception and seven passes defended. Roby has two seasons remaining on his current Texans contract.

"I apologize to my family, my teammates, the Houston Texans organization and the fans," Roby's statement read. "A few months ago, I unknowingly used a product that was contaminated with a banned substance by the NFL. I recognize that it is my job to know, and be responsible for, everything I put in my body. I will be suspended for six games ending my season. I will take the necessary steps in the future to prevent this from ever happening again. I look forward to rejoining my teammates next season in our goal to bring a championship to Houston."

Eagles vs. Seahawks: How to watch live stream, TV channel, NFL start time - CBS Sports

Who's Playing

Seattle @ Philadelphia

Current Records: Seattle 7-3; Philadelphia 3-6-1

What to Know

After two games on the road, the Philadelphia Eagles are heading back home. They will take on the Seattle Seahawks at 8:15 p.m. ET on Monday at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia lost both of their matches to Seattle last season on scores of 9-17 and 9-17, so they're hoping to turn the tables this season.

The Eagles didn't finish too far behind, but the squad still lost 22-17 to the Cleveland Browns last week. No one had a standout game offensively for Philadelphia, but they got scores from TE Dallas Goedert, TE Richard Rodgers, and LB Alex Singleton. QB Carson Wentz ended up with a passer rating of 123.80.

Meanwhile, Seattle was able to grind out a solid win over the Arizona Cardinals last Thursday, winning 28-21. Seattle's success was spearheaded by the efforts of QB Russell Wilson, who passed for two TDs and 197 yards on 28 attempts in addition to picking up 42 yards on the ground, and RB Carlos Hyde, who punched in one rushing touchdown. Wilson's performance made up for a slower contest against the Los Angeles Rams two weeks ago.

The Eagles are expected to lose this next one by 6.5. Now might not be the best time to take Philadelphia against the spread since they've let down bettors for the past two consecutive games.

Seattle's victory lifted them to 7-3 while Philadelphia's defeat dropped them down to 3-6-1. The Seahawks have been dynamite on the offensive side of the ball, averaging 31.80 points per game. We'll see if Philadelphia can find some way to disarm them.

NFL postpones Ravens-Steelers to Wednesday with early afternoon kickoff, marking third rescheduling - CBS Sports

NFL: Baltimore Ravens at Carolina Panthers
USA Today

On the eve of when the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers were set to play their already twice rescheduled head-to-head matchup, the game is once again on the move. The NFL has decided to postpone this contest a third time and will now be scheduled for Wednesday, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora confirmed. Kickoff for this game, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, will be at 3:40 p.m. ET on Wednesday. At first, this game was scheduled to cap off a three-game Thanksgiving slate, but was moved and added to Sunday's crop for Week 12 and was later bumped to Tuesday night.

This all comes as a severe COVID-19 outbreak has hit the Ravens organization with over 20 players being placed on the reserve/COVID list, including Lamar Jackson, J.K. Dobbins, Mark Andrews, Matt Judon, and Calais Campbell. Meanwhile, the Steelers have also been in the midst of a spat with the virus after a number of their players, headlined by running back James Conner, have also been placed on the reserve/COVID list.

According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, there were no new positive tests for the Ravens that would've impacted Tuesday's now moved game. That said, there was one new positive, but it was a player currently on injured reserve that hasn't been in close contact with anyone around the organization. On Monday, Baltimore did activate linebacker Jaylon Ferguson, guard D.J. Fluker, defensive tackle Broderick Washington and defensive back Iman Marshall from the reserve/COVID list.

Moving this game to Wednesday does give the league and both clubs one more day of breathing room to make sure the outbreak within the Ravens organization is under control along with getting a day of practice in. Baltimore's facility has been closed but is scheduled to reopen on Monday evening.

With this game being pushed to Wednesday, La Canfora reports that Pittsburgh's Week 13 matchup with Washington is being moved from Sunday to Monday. Baltimore's Week 13 game with the Cowboys was previously moved to Monday.

Report: Jeffrey Lurie gave directive to play Jalen Hurts if Carson Wentz struggles - Bleeding Green Nation

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie appears to be the driving force behind Jalen Hurts seeing an increased role as a quarterback in the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense. At least, that’s what this report from Adam Caplan of Inside The Birds indicates:

This report makes sense in the wake of Lurie reportedly being frustrated with the team. He clearly wants to see some changes.

The report also makes sense from a power perspective. We’ve previously talked about how Carson Wentz has a lot of control and we’ve wondered if Doug Pederson truly has the authority to bench the Eagles’ starting quarterback. Assuming this report is true, it appears he was not able to make that call without the owner’s blessing.

To be clear, this report isn’t claiming that Wentz has been benched. He’s fully expected to start against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.

But that the Eagles are taking away some of Wentz’s snaps indicates a full-time change is closer than not.

More discussion on the Eagles’ quarterback situation via this pregame report from NFL insider Mike Garafolo:

And as Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday, that will be the case: Hurts on the field while Wentz is not on the field. They’ve had those two together on the field [previously]. But now you’re going to see Hurts come in and be a quarterback. And a quarterback who’s a dual threat. Right now, when he’s in the game, he’s pretty much run the ball. It’s been some kind of wildcat-type thing.

The point here for the Eagles doing this, according sources I have spoken to, is to keep the defense guessing. To open up the possibility of him throwing the ball and not takign away one of those receiver spots by having Wentz out there. They are ADAMANT that Carson Wentz is not getting benched.

But, look, if Wentz plays well, then we’ll see more of Wentz. And he’ll continue to have a hold on his job. But if Hurts plays well, we’ll probably see more of Hurts.

The question of how much Carson Wentz we’re going to see lies, for the most part, in Carson Wentz’s hands.

Lol. Look, I know people are frustrated with the coaching staff, and rightfully so. But I have a hard time believing they’re so dumb that they didn’t think Hurts was allowed to throw more often. Or that having Wentz lined up out wide was a waste.

Methinks this purported reasoning is being used to deflect from the real reason that Hurts is in line to see playing time ... because Wentz is really struggling.

For a game that lacks intrigue in the sense that the Eagles are expected to lose, it’ll be very interesting to see how the Eagles handle their quarterback position on Monday night. If Wentz plays poorly against the NFL’s worst passing defense, apparently the green light is on for him to be replaced.

Assassinated Iranian nuclear scientist shot with remote-controlled machine gun, news agency says - CNN

With top Iranian officials blaming Israel, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and others have promised revenge for the killing of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was the country's chief nuclear scientist..
There were conflicting accounts from Iranian news agencies about how the attack unfolded.
One report published Sunday from Fars News said Fakhrizadeh was traveling with his wife Friday in a bulletproof car, alongside three security personnel vehicles, when he heard what sounded like bullets hitting a vehicle, and he exited the car to determine what had happened.
When he exited the vehicle, a remote-controlled machine gun opened fire from a Nissan stopped about 150 meters (164 yards) from Fakhrizadeh's car, Fars News said.
Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, in 2019.
Fakhrizadeh was hit at least three times, according to Fars News. His bodyguard was also shot. Following the gunfire, the Nissan exploded, Fars News reported, adding the attack lasted three minutes.
CNN cannot independently confirm the news agency's version of events.
The semi-official Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) also reported Fakhrizadeh's car was hit by gunfire, followed by an explosion and more gunfire, citing Iranian Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Amir Hatami.
"Based on reports received from members of his security detail, Mr. Fakhrizadeh's vehicle was initially targeted by gunfire, after which a Nissan vehicle laden with explosives was set off in close proximity to them as gunfire, targeting their vehicle, was continuing," Hatami said, according to ISNA.
IRIB, Iranian state television, said the explosion happened first, followed by gunfire from attackers.
Seyed Kamal Kharrazi, the head of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, compared the assassination to the killing of Qasem Soleimani, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported Sunday. Soleimani, the leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps' Quds Force, was killed in a US drone strike earlier this year in Iraq.
"Undoubtedly, the Islamic Republic of Iran will give a calculated and decisive answer to the criminals who took Martyr Fakhrizadeh," Kharrazi was quoted as saying.
Fakhrizadeh was the head of the research center of new technology in the elite Revolutionary Guards and was a leading figure in Iran's nuclear program.

Iranian leaders blame Israel

Supreme Leader Khameini wrote Saturday on a Twitter account that often carries his official statments, "Mr Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed by the oppressive enemies. This rare scientific mind lost his life for his everlasting great scientific work. He lost his life for God and the supreme leader."
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called on the international community "to end their shameful double standards" and "condemn this act of state terror." He added that the attack showed "serious indications of Israeli role."
Maj. Gen. Hossein Dehghan, Khamenei's military adviser, tweeted Saturday that "Zionists" are seeking to create "all-out war" and vowed to "descend like lightning" on Fakhrizadeh's killers.
President Hassan Rouhani, also among the many Iranian leaders blaming Israel, promised retaliation as well, saying during a cabinet meeting Saturday, "The think tanks and the enemies of Iran must know that the Iranian nation and the officials in charge in the country are brave and determined to respond to the murder in time."
The killing, he said, was carried out at "the filthy hands of oppressors, in concert with the illegitimate Zionist regime."
Iran has provided no evidence of Israeli involvement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office declined to comment to CNN on Friday.
Israeli Settlement Affairs Minister Tzachi Hanegbi told Israel's Channel 12 news he had "no idea" who killed Fakhrizadeh, but called it "very embarrassing for Iran."
The US State Department and International Atomic Energy Agency have said in multiple reports that Fakhrizadeh held deep insight into the Islamic Republic's nuclear capabilities. In 2018, Netanyahu said Fakhrizadeh was the head of Project Amad, which he and others describe as a secret nuclear weapons endeavor.
"Remember that name, Fakhrizadeh," the prime minister told reporters at the time.

Protests erupt in Tehran

The killing threatens to compound tensions in Tehran-Washington relations, which have deteriorated under US President Donald Trump. In 2018, Trump pulled out of a multilateral nuclear deal with Iran, and Iran began withdrawing its commitments from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action last year. Trump has invoked crippling economic sanctions on the country.
The White House is closely monitoring Fakhrizadeh's killing, it said. On Friday, Trump retweeted Israeli journalist Yossi Melman, who wrote that Fakhrizadeh "was head of Iran's secret military program and wanted for many years by Mossad," Israel's foreign intelligence agency.
Students protest outside the Foreign Ministry in Tehran on Saturday.
Students and young Iranians have converged on several government buildings in Tehran, and at one demonstration outside the Foreign Ministry on Saturday, protesters burned US and Israeli flags and posters depicting Trump and President-elect Joe Biden.
The European Union condemned the killing and called for "maximum restraint," while the United Kingdom's Foreign Office said it was "urgently trying to establish the facts."
The funeral and burial of Fakhrizadeh will be held Monday, Fars News reported. Fakhrizadeh's remains were taken to the shrine of Imam Reza, one of the most important religious hubs for Shias, in Mashhad on Saturday. Following a Sunday service in Mashhad, his body was to be taken to Tehran to the tomb of Ayatollah Khomeini, the Islamic republic's founder.

Sunday Night Football: Aaron Rodgers throws four TDs as Packers rout Bears - NBC Sports - NFL

USA TODAY Sports

Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes, and the Packers Defense forced three Mitchell Trubisky turnovers as Green Bay steamrolled the Bears 41-25 on Sunday Night Football.

Six different players scored for the Packers, who moved to 8-3 with the win. They have the Eagles, Lions, Panthers, Titans and Bears remaining.

The Saints have the best record in the NFC at 9-2, but the Packers hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with a 37-30 victory in Week 3.

The Bears fell to 5-6 and into a second-place tie in the NFC North with the Vikings with their fifth consecutive loss.

Rodgers was 21-of-29 for 211 yards and touchdowns of 12, 5, 2 and 39 yards to Davante Adams, Marcedes Lewis, Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan. The Packers’ scoring drives covered 75, 75, 80, 53 and 66 yards.

The Packers’ other touchdown came on a 14-yard fumble return by Preston Smith as Za'Darius Smith forced Trubisky to lose the football.

Packers safety Darnell Savage had two interceptions of Trubisky before injuring his back.

Trubisky, who returned to the starting lineup after Nick Foles‘ hip injury last week, went 26-of-46 for 242 yards with three touchdowns to go with the two interceptions and the lost fumble.

The Packers led 41-10 before Trubisky directed back-to-back scoring drives. David Montgomery had 16 touches for 143 yards and one touchdown.

Rodgers was not sacked or even hit, and the Bears forced only eight hurries. Rodgers eclipsed 50,000 career passing yards.

Bears pass rusher Khalil Mack had only three tackles and no other stats.

Trump baselessly claims FBI and DOJ might have 'rigged' election - Business Insider - Business Insider

Saints coach Sean Payton doesn’t have much sympathy for Vic Fangio. Or for the Broncos. - The Denver Post

Did you have some sympathy for Broncos coach Vic Fangio, Sean Payton?

Any sympathy at all, given that the guy was forced to trot out an offense, in an NFL game, without the services of an NFL quarterback?

“Yeah, look, I think it’s tough for all the (teams),” the Saints coach replied. “Look, this is a challenging year. I felt bad for the cardboard fans. But it is what it is.”

So in other words … nope. Not much.

The Saints (9-2) weren’t apologizing for dancing on the grave the Broncos’ offense dug for itself. Or, if you like, the grave the NFL dug instead, given that New Orleans’ 31-3 rout at Empower Field went on as scheduled despite the home team having no healthy, active quarterbacks available.

Jeff Driskel tested positive for the coronavirus this past Thursday, and the prior contact of starter Drew Lock and backups Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles to Driskel earlier in the week also rendered them ineligible to play under the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols. The decision came down Saturday afternoon.

“It was a little weird,” Saints tailback Alvin Kamara said of the Broncos’ plight. “It was a weird day, a weird vibe to the game. But a win is a win.”

The closest thing to sympathy for the hosts came from Saints’ tailback Latavius Murray, who rambled for 124 yards. Murray after the game tipped his cap to Broncos emergency quarterback Kendall Hinton, a practice squad wide receiver and a former college quarterback at Wake Forest.

“I gave them a lot of credit to even have the confidence to step on the field and do what (Hinton) did,” Murray said of the Broncos wideout, who completed one pass in nine attempts and was picked off twice.

“I know it was tough for him. But I have a lot of respect for them. But it’s the kind of season that it’s been.”

The NFL’s decision not to delay the game didn’t just rub the Broncos’ faithful the wrong way. A gift-wrapped win for the Saints tightened New Orleans’ grip on the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, a scenario that irked fans of the Packers, Seahawks and Rams, all battling New Orleans for the top spot.

“Yeah, I don’t think ‘weird’ is the right word,” Payton said. “Look, everything about this season is unique. So we kind of tune out the things we can’t control.”

New Orleans quarterback Taysom Hill proved more empathetic, being a former college quarterback himself at BYU before taking snaps at tailback, wideout, tight end and on special teams as a pro.

Hill, who was making only his second NFL start behind center, said his directive from Payton “drastically changed” on Saturday when the Saints coaching staff found out the Broncos were going to have to field an offense without a natural quarterback.

“I think, going into the game, there was so much uncertainty; (we) didn’t know how this was going to play out,” said Hill, who threw for 78 yards and ran for 44 with two touchdowns on the ground. “Offensively, I’m not surprised that’s the way (the) game went.”

A stingy Saints defense that came in ranked fourth among NFL defenses in sack percentage and ninth in opponent scoring was going to prove a challenge, regardless of whether or not Lock was in the fold. But it was clear from the outset that New Orleans intended to crowd the box and dare somebody — anybody — from the Broncos to try and throw.

Knowing darn well that they couldn’t.

“It was kind of crazy,” said Saints linebacker Kwon Alexander, whose recovery of a fumbled exchange between wildcat quarterback Phillip Lindsay and center Lloyd Cushenberry late in the second quarter broke a weird contest wide open. “(We) knew they couldn’t do too much, especially (with Hinton) being a quarterback for just a game.”

Bears at Packers score: Live updates, game stats, TV channel, streaming info for 'Sunday Night Football' - CBSSports.com

The Chicago Bears hoped that Mitchell Trubisky would begin a comeback tour in his first start since Week 3 on Sunday night, but it turns out not even a quarterback switch could save Windy City from its ongoing decline. The Green Bay Packers looked comfortable right out of the gate in Week 12's NFC North showdown, and thanks to nearly flawless performances from Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Jones and Matt LaFleur's cruising offense, the home team completely ran away with it in prime time. A trio of Trubisky turnovers, coupled with a collapse by Chicago's defense, helped seal the big Packers victory, a 41-25 rout that keeps Green Bay firmly atop the division.

Sunday night's decision confirmed that the two sides are headed in opposite directions. The Packers are now 8-3 and three games ahead of Chicago in the North, not to mention 4-1 at home. The Bears, who once stood atop the NFC after opening the season 5-1, have now lost five straight and are in danger of falling behind the streaking Minnesota Vikings.

Here are some immediate takeaways from Sunday night's Packers rout.

Why the Packers won

Their offense was basically unstoppable. It doesn't get much simpler than that. Against a well-regarded defense, Aaron Rodgers flicked the ball with ease, lofting and side-arming wide-open targets with the notable cushion of a steady ground game. Matt LaFleur dialed up plenty of straightforward carries for Aaron Jones early on, and Chicago had no answer for them, with Rodgers then finishing drives by finding his Big Three in Davante Adams, Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan. Jamaal Williams was almost as effective running up the gut once the score got out of hand, combining with Jones to gain more than 160 yards against the Bears' front.

Defensively, the Pack looked vulnerable out of the gate but quickly capitalized on Mitchell Trubisky's errant deep shots (Darnell Savage was gifted a pair of picks) before icing the game away by feasting on Chicago's maligned O-line. Preston Smith and Za'Darius Smith were predictably productive when they needed to be to keep the heat on Trubisky.

Why the Bears lost

Two reasons, primarily: No. 1, they didn't have a viable replacement for Akiem Hicks; and No. 2, they didn't get even a slight upgrade at quarterback. Let's start with the latter: Mitchell Trubisky legitimately opened the night well, with two red-zone drops softening an otherwise promising return under center. From that point forward, though, he did more to hurt the Bears than help them, perhaps even more than the injured Nick Foles; his two INTs were incredibly off-target lobs into double coverage, his second-quarter fumble gave Green Bay a 27-3 lead, and he repeatedly short-hopped balls down the stretch. Play-calling didn't always help, with the Bears all but abandoning David Montgomery despite an early 57-yard sprint.

The defense might've been more disappointing considering Trubisky's already-spotty track record. Hicks' absence left a gaping hole in the middle of the D-line, but the secondary was also victimized early and often, particularly in the red zone where they'd previously thrived.

Turning point

First down Bears, at the Packers' 38. Green Bay had just driven 75 yards for a touchdown to go up 6-3 in the first, but Chicago was about to strike back with a second straight promising series of its own. And then the Trubisky of old reared his ugly head, trying a deep end-zone shot to a well-covered Darnell Mooney and essentially punting the ball right back to Green Bay. Although the game was still within three points at the time, that turnover unmasked Trubisky, erased a would-be scoring drive and set up another clock-burning TD series for Green Bay. The game was never close from that point forward.

Play of the game

Give it to Preston Smith, the big man who not only came off the edge to pressure Trubisky but then scooped up Mitch's fumble and outraced everyone for six, which put the Packers up 27-3:

What's next

The Packers (8-3) will be back at Lambeau in Week 13, when they're set to host the Philadelphia Eagles (3-6-1), who will be coming off a short week following Monday's game against Seattle. The Bears (5-6), meanwhile, will try to get back to .500 as they return to Soldier Field to host the rival Detroit Lions (4-7), who will be playing their first game since the firing of coach Matt Patricia.

Scores Killed In Massacre Of Farmers In Nigeria - NPR

People attend a funeral for those killed by suspected Boko Haram militants in Zabarmari, Nigeria on Sunday. Officials say armed men on motorcycles reportedly killed at least 70 rice farmers and fishermen while they were harvesting crops in northern Borno state. Jossy Ola/AP

Scores are dead after armed men on motorcycles gruesomely attacked agricultural workers in northeastern Nigeria.

Officials say the attack occurred Saturday in the country's Borno state. Multiple outlets report that suspected Islamist militants attacked the farmers while they were harvesting the fields in a rural part of the state.

Residents told Reuters at least 70 were killed during attack. A U.N. official in the region, Edward Kallon, said "tens" of civilians were killed.

"The incident is the most violent direct attack against innocent civilians this year. I call for the perpetrators of this heinous and senseless act to be brought to justice," said Kallon, who serves as the resident and humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria.

The U.N. Security Council said that "those responsible for these terrorist attacks should be held accountable."

Reuters reports that 30 of the victims were beheaded in the attack. At least ten women were reportedly still missing as of Sunday.

Though no one has claimed responsibility, Reuters and the BBC note that at least two militant groups are active in the area: Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province.

Both groups have carried out massacres in the region before. More than 37,000 people have died in incidents involving Boko Haram, the Council on Foreign Relations estimates.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said: "I condemn the killing of our hard-working farmers by terrorists in Borno state. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief. May their souls rest in peace," the BBC reported.

On Sunday, 43 of those killed were buried in a service, according to Reuters, where the governor of Borno, Babagana Zulum, called on the federal government to recruit more forces to protect farmers in the area.

Zulum also made reference to rising food prices in the country, while speaking at the burials.

"In one side, they stay at home [where] they may be killed by hunger and starvation, on the other, they go out to their farmlands and risk getting killed by the insurgents," Zulum said, Reuters reported.

Trump says 'hard to get' his election claim to Supreme Court - Los Angeles Times

President Trump, even while repeating his groundless claim that “we won the race,” appeared Sunday to acknowledge dwindling chances of success in his legal battle to overturn the results of the Nov. 3 election won by President-elect Joe Biden.

“It’s hard to get into the Supreme Court,” he said in an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” his first extended question-and-answer session since the balloting. Adding to a string of legal defeats for Trump’s campaign, results of a partial recount in Wisconsin announced Sunday added slightly to Biden’s margin of victory.

In a rambling 45-minute call to a friendly host who failed to challenge his many falsehoods, Trump mused bitterly that federal law enforcement agencies were failing to come to his aid — or had even been complicit in what he continued to describe, without foundation, as “massive fraud.”

“Maybe they are involved,” he said of the FBI and the Justice Department, without providing any evidence to support his conjecture. At another point, he described the bureau and the Justice Department as “missing in action” when it came to investigating purported electoral wrongdoing.

Asked about his legal plans, Trump said he would devote “125% of my energy” to pushing ahead with a court fight, even though his backers have notched dozens of defeats, including a rebuff Saturday night from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

“You need a judge that’s willing to hear a case, you need a Supreme Court that’s willing to make a real big decision,” said Trump, adding that it would take a “brave judge, or justice” to back him because of alleged threats against jurists and his lawyers.

Before Republicans pushed through last month’s confirmation of conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett, Trump alluded to the importance of getting her into place quickly, in case of election disputes coming before the Supreme Court.

The formal transition to the Biden administration began last week, and Trump said Thursday he would “certainly” vacate office Jan. 20 as required, after the electoral college puts the expected seal on Biden’s victory next month.

In the Fox interview, however, the president refused to say whether any particular date — including Dec. 14, when electors meet in their respective states to cast ballots, or even Inauguration Day on Jan. 20 — would mark an end to his insistence that he, not Biden, had prevailed.

The former vice president’s margin of victory in the popular vote has surpassed 6 million, and his projected electoral college tally of 306 far exceeds the 270 required.

“I don’t want to give you an actual date,” Trump said when Fox interviewer Maria Bartiromo asked at what point he might admit legal defeat.

Throughout the interview, he alternately telegraphed defiance and resignation, declaring that “my mind will not change in six months” but also portraying himself as a victim of nefarious forces who “for the most part… got away with it.”

Trump’s unprecedented refusal to concede the election in the face of a definitive loss has prompted many Senate Republicans to take more and more contorted public positions to avoid contradicting the president’s victory claims.

Appearing Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), a member of the Senate GOP leadership, repeatedly refused to refer to Biden as the president-elect.

“The president-elect will be the president-elect when the electors vote for him,” he said.

Blunt said of Biden taking office: “We are certainly moving forward as if that is what is going to happen on January the 20th.” He also suggested, however, that the president’s backers might withhold formal acceptance of Biden’s victory for at least another month, until the House and Senate convene Jan. 6 for a joint session to count electoral votes.

With more than seven weeks remaining in office, Trump has signaled no sense of urgency on the raging COVID-19 pandemic, which has now killed more than 266,000 Americans. Public health experts expressed alarm again Sunday about the twin perils of colder weather and infections spread by holiday travel and gatherings.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious diseases specialist, said on “Meet the Press” that “what we expect, unfortunately, as we go for the next couple of weeks into December, [is] that we might see a surge superimposed upon that surge that we’re already in.”

Another member of the White House coronavirus task force, Dr. Deborah Birx, said on the same program that “we’re entering this post-Thanksgiving surge with three, four and 10 times as much disease across the country” as the period following Memorial Day.

“And so that’s what worries us the most,” she said.

In another arena, some former senior figures in the national security establishment are warning the country faces a perilous time before Biden assumes office.

Retired Adm. Mike Mullen, a former head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Sunday he was “actually very concerned about the Trump loyalists who have now gone to work in the Pentagon” in the wake of Trump firing Defense Secretary Mark Esper by tweet after the election.

“Over the course of 50 or 60 days you can do something constructive, but you can do something that’s really destructive,” Mullen said on NBC.
