Camilla and Prince Charles share touching birthday tribute to 'wonderful man' Captain Tom - Express

and Prince Charles publicly marked Captain Tom's 100th birthday with a heartfelt message shared on social media. The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince of Wales' official social media account, Clarence House, published: "Wishing a very happy 100th birthday to @captaintommoore today!"

The birthday message was accompanied by a video in which Camilla praised the veteran for his fundraising efforts.

Speaking earlier this week to Dame Darcey Bussell and broadcaster Angela Rippon, Camilla highlighted how the coronavirus pandemic is bringing out the best of some people.

She said: "There is a silver lining to everything and a lot of good is going to come out of this horrible, horrible time.

"I think it is bringing out the best of many people, I think people are so kind you see, the tiny little things of helping their neighbours and probably talking to neighbours they have never talked before, doing their shopping...

"And that wonderful man Captain Tom, walking around and raising all that money.

"That sort of thing makes you proud to be British, doesn't it?"

Charles and Camilla's birthday wishes to Captain Tom come after the Queen agreed on awarding the veteran with the military title of Honorary Colonel.

Earlier this month, Prince William had described the veteran as an "absolute legend" and congratulated on his selfless act.

Speaking to the BBC alongside Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, the Duke said: "It’s incredible, I did see him on the news the other night and I thought, ‘good on him.’ It’s amazing.

"What I love also is he’s a 99-year-old war vet, he’s been around a long time, knows everything and it’s wonderful everyone has been inspired by his story and his determination."

Kate and William also donated an undisclosed sum of money to the captain's fundraising campaign, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

Prince Harry also spoke of Captain Tom's fundraiser and how, together with the volunteering push demonstrated by thousands of Britons across the country, it made him "proud".

Appearing on the Declassified podcast, he said: "Congratulations to Tom, I think what he’s done is utterly amazing.

"It’s not just what he’s done, it’s the reaction that people have had as well, I think is again just wonderfully British."

Captain Tom launched his fundraising campaign on April 9, pledging to complete 100 laps of his yard before turning 100.

His initial goal of raising £1000 was hit within 24 hours and, as almost 1.5million people contributed in his fundraiser, Captain Tom managed to raise a record £30 million in less than three weeks.

The veteran, who was thanked with a special RAF flypast earlier today, will donate this money to the NHS, in a bid to help its staff fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
