Cincinnati Bengals rookie quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow is the latest professional athlete to speak out after the death of George Floyd on Monday in Minneapolis.
In a Friday Twitter post, Burrow wrote: "The black community needs our help. They have been unheard for far too long. Open your ears, listen, and speak. This isn't politics. This is human rights."
Floyd died Monday in police custody. A video quickly circulated showing Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on top of Floyd, holding his knee against his throat for several minutes as Floyd repeatedly said he could not breathe. Chauvin and three other officers were later fired.
After a second night of protests in Minneapolis, Chauvin was arrested Friday afternoon and faces charges of third-degree murder and manslaughter.
On Monday night, after Floyd's death, LeBron James tweeted and posted on Instagram: "Do you understand NOW!!??!!?? Or is it still blurred to you? #StayWoke." Former NBA player Stephen Jackson, now an ESPN analyst, was a close friend to Floyd and has done several interviews, sharing emotional stories about Floyd.
Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who in 2016 began protesting police brutality against people of color, on Friday announced he would provide legal and financial assistance to protesters in Minneapolis.
