We had 37 picks on Day 1 of the MLB Draft, comprising the first round and the competitive balance A round — a relatively short first day for the draft, with only eight teams picking twice. Still, the day provided plenty of drama when the Orioles went rogue at pick No. 2 and the draft’s best player slipped all the way to No. 5. Here are my thoughts on what every team with a Day 1 pick ended up doing with their selections.
• No big surprise at No. 1, as the Tigers take Spencer Torkelson, the player they were assumed to be taking way back in March. Torkelson was No. 2 on my big board, a right-handed power bat with patience and a solid feel to hit, a first baseman who could probably move to left field in pro ball. The Tigers seem to think he can handle third base; he’s a decent athlete, but that is certainly an uphill battle.
• The surprises started at No. 2, with Baltimore going for my No. 11 prospect: Arkansas outfielder Heston Kjerstad.
