With the ACC releasing a new 10-game schedule for the upcoming 2020 season, it also allows for one non-conference game.
The non-conference game must be held in the school's home state.
The opponent will be one of the three non-conference teams already on the schedule between Temple, UAB, or Wagner. A previously scheduled game against Michigan State had already been canceled by the Big Ten canceling non-conference games for its schools.
"Yes it's one of those games," Miami director of athletics Blake James confirmed on Wednesday evening. "Obviously I have contracts with all three of them. Our plan is that we would play one of the three if they meet the medical standards as established by the conference, but assuming that is the case we will have one of those opponents for this year."
An actual date has not been determined for the non-conference opponent or for the 10 conference games, but the ACC announced its teams will begin the week of Sept. 7-12.
A notable addition to Miami's conference schedule was Clemson.
"I'm honestly not surprised," James said. "I figured we would get either Clemson or Notre Dame. I think part of the thing here is there's TV inventory we're going to fill and a Miami-Clemson game is one that's going to get a lot of national exposure. It's great for the ACC, it's great for college football, and it's great for the young men in our program to have the opportunity to go play a team like Clemson. It's an exciting time and a great environment there. They have a great program and I know Manny (Diaz) will have our guys ready to go and I know our guys will be excited to go up there and battle the Tigers."
While Clemson was added, Notre Dame, an independent school which is playing an ACC slate this year, was left off.
"I would love the opportunity to play Notre Dame," James said. "I think Miami-Notre Dame is great for college football. I know our fans would enjoy it. I know their fans would enjoy it. With that said it's a balance of 15 teams. If you look at our schedule I think we have a very challenging schedule. Our schedule is loaded with teams that are very talented and ready to go."
James added that the plan remains to begin preseason practices on Aug. 7.
