Sam Darnold rumbles for 46-yard TD as Jets strike first against Broncos - ESPN

When your offense is struggling, just let the quarterback run.

Sam Darnold delivered the longest run of his NFL career, scoring on a 46-yard scramble on the New York Jets' first possession on Thursday night against the visiting Denver Broncos. On a third-and-7, Darnold faced heavy pressure against a five-man rush, as the Jets failed to block blitzing linebacker Alexander Johnson.

Darnold dodged Johnson, escaped the pocket and pulled a juke move on safety Justin Simmons. Somehow, he outran the rest of the Denver defense, reaching a high speed of 17.47 mph, per NFL Next Gen Stats data.

Lamar Jackson he's not, but he got the job done and gave the Jets their first lead of the season. The touchdown run is the longest ever by a Jets quarterback.

Darnold gained 55 yards after first contact on the scoring run, the most yards after contact by a quarterback on a run over the past 10 seasons. Only two players had that many yards after contact on a rush TD last season: running backs Derrick Henry and Damien Williams.
