Rudy Giuliani, Pamela Anderson... Mark Poloncarz? Add the Erie County executive to the long list of people who have been pranked by “Borat.”
The Buffalo News reports Poloncarz and Erie County Health Commissioner Gale Burstein had a videoconference call with health officials from Kazakhstan on Oct. 14 to talk about ways to contain the spread of Covid-19. The virtual meeting was real, but afterwards Poloncarz mistakenly tagged the fake Twitter account @KazakhstanGovt in a tweet.
The account, owned by the marketing team behind Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” trolled Poloncarz over the gaffe.
“Thank you for speaking. Apologies video call was dropped. Our Premier picked up phone to make call sex chat line and interrupt model signal,” @KazakhstanGovt tweeted to the Erie County executive.
The Buffalo News reports Poloncarz deleted the erroneous tweet and reposted it with the Kazakhstan Twitter handle, which was later suspended by the social network.
Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw posted screenshots of the exchange on Wednesday, mocking Poloncarz.
“Mark Poloncarz trolled me with security video for not wearing a mask. Looks like he got trolled on Twitter by Borat. The County Executive and Rudy Giuliani have something in common. Word of advice: double check who you tag on social media. Very nice,” Mychajliw wrote.
“Borat," the 2006 mockumentary film, and its new sequel, released last week on Amazon Prime Video, both star Cohen as Borat Sagdiyev, a fake “journalist” from Kazakhstan. In the new film, his “Borat” character is recognized in public so he dresses up in disguise — while still pretending to be Borat — and pulls off a series of pranks that include singing a fake country song at a pro-Trump rally and attempting to “gift” his daughter Tutar (played by Maria Bakalova) to “Vice Premier” Mike Pence.
“Borat 2” has made its biggest headlines over a scene showing Bakalova pretending to be a conservative news reporter interviewing Giuliani, tricking him into a hotel bedroom when Borat bursts in and says she’s 15 and “too old for you.” The former New York City mayor called it a “hit job” after footage emerged of him allegedly putting his hand down his pants while with Bakalova, 24, and insists he was merely tucking in his shirt after removing his microphone.
The original 2006 comedy film centered on the Borat character attempting to make a documentary about American society and culture for his home country’s government. Gags include a “mankini” bathing suit, lessons from a driving instructor, and trying to make Pamela Anderson “my wife.”
