Cowboys 'leaning towards' Garrett Gilbert vs. Steelers - 247Sports

After rookie Ben DiNucci had his fair share of struggles against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, it looks like the Dallas Cowboys could start their fourth different quarterback of the 2020 season. Right now, former Texas Longhorn and SMU Mustang Garrett Gilbert is in position to win that job.

On Sunday night, DiNucci completed 21 of his 40 passes for 180 yards as the Cowboys posted just nine points in the loss. Because of DiNucci’s rough game, the Cowboys are now looking at a couple of other options. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Gilbert and former Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush will be in the mix for first-team reps.

“The #Cowboys plan to give Garrett Gilbert and Cooper Rush reps in practice and pick one of them at week’s end to start at QB against the #Steelers, sources tell me and @RapSheet,” Pelissero tweeted. “It won’t be rookie Ben DiNucci, who struggled Sunday night. Playing to experience at the position.”

For now at least, it seems like Gilbert has the edge over Rush as the team works toward Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport thinks the team currently prefers Gilbert as its No. 1 option moving forward.

“This will be interesting: Sounds like the #Cowboys are leaning towards Garrett Gilbert as their starter after considering all options,” Rapoport tweeted. “But they want to see how Cooper Rush and Gilbert handle practice reps.”

Gilbert has been in the NFL since 2016, when the St. Louis Rams drafted him in the sixth round. He began the 2020 season on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad, but the Cowboys signed him after Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending ankle injury. In his four NFL season with various teams, Gilbert has completed two of his six pass attempts for 40 yards.

Back in 2009, Gilbert signed at the University of Texas, and he played against Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game after Colt McCoy went down with injury. He then spent two more years with the Longhorns before transferring to SMU. During Gilbert’s time in Austin, he completed 58.7% of his passes for 3,301 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. At SMU, where he played for two seasons, he threw for 6,460 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions.
