No. 6 Oklahoma rolled to a Cotton Bowl victory over No. 7 Florida on Wednesday night. It was the culmination of a bounce back run for the Sooners, who were 1-2 after three weeks on the season.
The first quarter of a 55-20 victory was all that was needed to set a tone for the Sooners on Wednesday night. It took just five plays to score the game’s first touchdown and only two defensive plays to pick off Florida quarterback Kyle Trask and return it for a score. Just like that, it was 14-0 in the opening minutes of the game and the first blow was delivered.
The Gators battled back and got to within four points in the second quarter, but the Sooners snapped back quickly with two more touchdowns to take a 31-13 lead to halftime. From there, it was easy coasting for Oklahoma, as it won its eighth straight game of the year, taking home the Cotton Bowl trophy.
Quarterback Spencer Rattler continued his hot streak and warranted his preseason Heisman buzz, despite not being named a finalist this year. He finished 22 of 34 passing for 272 yards, one touchdown and a rushing touchdown in the blowout. At the very least, it gives him a leg up going into next season where Oklahoma will be the Big 12 favorites once again and be a College Football Playoff contender.
Rattler spoke with the media after the game to sum up the game, look back on the season and looked ahead to 2021.
