In the second quarter, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen attempted to connect with Stefon Diggs on a 31-yard touchdown pass.
It was one of Allen’s few passes on the night that was off the mark as it sailed by Diggs. Despite having nothing to do with the outcome of the play, New England Patriots cornerback J.C. Jackson began talking to Stefon Diggs post-play while motioning incomplete.
Diggs did not take kindly to Jackson’s talk and let the cornerback know about it by pointing a finger in the cornerback’s face.
So what happened after the play? According to Diggs, Jackson told the Bills’ No. 1 receiver not to test him on the field. Diggs did not want to get into the specifics of what he said in response to Jackson, but added that part of his message to the cornerback was to relax.
Jackson probably wishes he had taken that advice before jawing at Buffalo’s No. 1 receiver. Diggs would go on to catch nine balls for 145 yards and three touchdowns in Buffalo’s lopsided 38-9 victory with two of his scores coming against Jackson in coverage.
Following the loss, Jackson was asked what he learned about covering Diggs. He told the media you have to be near perfect to beat a receiver like Diggs.
Hopefully for his own sake, Jackson also learned the importance of letting his play do the talking for him going forward. His early outburst may have given Diggs some extra motivation on Monday night.
