Russell Wilson‘s potential divorce from the Seattle Seahawks appears to have become a little more likely, with the Dallas Cowboys reported to be on his wishlist of potential new teams.
Following a report from The Athletic that said Wilson had broached possible trade destinations with the Seahawks, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wilson has not asked for a trade and would like to remain in Seattle, but would only consider the Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders and Chicago Bears.
Additionally, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Wilson does not expect to be traded at present but that multiple league executives believe he will eventually be made available by the Seahawks.
Were a deal to come to pass, it would have a seismic impact on the league, but it is only a trade to the Cowboys that would significantly change this year’s draft.
Indeed, Dallas is the sole franchise in that quartet of teams that owns a top-10 pick in 2021. A trade to either the Saints, Raiders or Bears would not do much to influence the first round this year, but a deal with the Cowboys could create chaos.
What a potential Cowboys deal would look like
Seattle would obviously demand the 10th overall pick in any deal, putting the Seahawks in a position to potentially draft Wilson’s successor.
Wilson’s arrival in Dallas would obviously make Dak Prescott surplus to requirements. The Cowboys could potentially tag and trade Prescott or simply let him walk in free agency.
In either scenario, the likes of the New York Jets, the Miami Dolphins and the Carolina Panthers could be involved in the bidding. The prospect of another team in the top 10 not needing to draft a quarterback could lead to the signal-callers in the group after Trevor Lawrence sliding down the board and quarterback-needy teams scrambling to trade up and grab them.
Zach Wilson, Justin Fields and Trey Lance will all be in high demand and teams in spots to draft one of them will almost certainly field trade offers. But a Wilson trade to Dallas would increase the odds of a draft-day deal for one of the top quarterback prospects.
Everyone loves draft-day chaos and, if you’re a neutral solely interested in watching the drama unfold, you should be firmly cheering for Wilson to end up in Dallas.
