Ronda Rousey praises Conor McGregor for post-fight behavior after UFC 264; McGregor responds - MMA Fighting

Former champion and UFC Hall of Famer Ronda Rousey had nothing but praise for Conor McGregor’s antics after suffering a broken leg in his fight with Dustin Poirier this past Saturday night.

Just moments after McGregor went down on the canvas following the gruesome injury, he was shouting at officials making sure it was noted that the fight was called off due to a doctor’s stoppage and not because he obviously couldn’t continue on a shattered leg. McGregor then turned his attention to Poirier as he continued to issue death threats and insults aimed at the former interim lightweight champion as well as his wife, Jolie Poirier.

While McGregor’s behavior earned him quite a bit of vitriol from Poirier after the fight, Rousey applauded the Irish superstar for having the mindset to already begin building towards his return to action even as he was laying on the ground with a broken leg.

“I’m amazed that as soon as you hit the ground you were already promoting the next fight, Conor McGregor,” Rousey wrote on Twitter. “I [definitely] wouldn’t have had the mind to do that. The other fighters, UFC and media are lucky to have you.”

While he received praise from Rousey for his antics, the post-fight death threats and name-calling towards Poirier’s wife hasn’t been as well received by other fighters or even UFC president Dana White.

White, who historically has stayed hands off when it comes to policing the speech of his fighters in the UFC, actually admitted that he wasn’t thrilled with McGregor targeting Poirier’s family both before and after their trilogy on Saturday night.

“Yeah, I don’t like that,” White said at the UFC 264 post-fight press conference. “Yeah, that’s not good. Leave people’s families and wives and all that stuff out of it. Family has nothing to do with it.”

As for McGregor, he’s already undergone surgery to repair the damage done from the broken leg and in his post fight statement he called Poirier’s win over him “illegitimate” as he plans on running it back with him as soon as he’s healthy again.

When it came to Rousey’s comments, McGregor was obviously pleased and thankful for the praise about his antics.

“Thank you for the message Ronda!” McGregor wrote back to Rousey on Twitter. “I appreciate it greatly.”
