Heading into Week 4 of the fantasy football season, what are the latest RB updates from Friday’s injury reports? Which RBs will be questionable heading into the game Sunday, and which options for Monday appeared on the injury report again on Friday?
Which RBs are on the latest injury report update this week and could be a concern for fantasy football managers?
Christian McCaffrey, Carolina Panthers
As expected, the Panthers ruled Christian McCaffrey out of their Week 4 matchup. He injured his hamstring during Carolina’s Thursday Night Football game against the Texans in Week 3. However, there is optimism he may only miss a game or two. For that reason, the Panthers did not place McCaffrey on injured reserve at this stage.
In McCaffrey’s absence, Chuba Hubbard is expected to draw the start. While Hubbard has had mixed success this season, volume alone should make him an intriguing option this week.
Dalvin Cook, Minnesota Vikings
After missing Week 3 with an ankle injury, Dalvin Cook has been limited in practice this week. The talented RB heads into the weekend listed as questionable on the Vikings’ Friday injury report and could be a late decision ahead of their 1 PM ET kickoff against the Cleveland Browns.
Cook told NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero that “he got a lot of reps this week, feels good and, barring a setback, expects to play Sunday.”
Aaron Jones, Green Bay Packers
Aaron Jones will carry no injury designation into the weekend despite logging a third straight limited appearance on the Packers’ injury report. The Green Bay running back should be a full go on Sunday. Jones has averaged 13.7 rushing attempts per game this season and has been targeted 10 times.
Melvin Gordon, Denver Broncos
Unfortunately for Melvin Gordon’s fantasy managers, the RB was listed as questionable on Denver’s injury report Friday. Gordon’s status for Sunday is in doubt after recording a third straight limited practice with a ribs/lower leg designation.
With Javonte Williams on the roster, will the Broncos be willing to risk the veteran RB aggravating his injury? It is going to be tough to trust Gordon against the Ravens.
Darrell Henderson, Los Angeles Rams
There is positive news for Darrell Henderson’s fantasy managers as Sean McVay suggested there should be no question of his availability Sunday.
“I don’t anticipate him not being able to go, he’s been good this week so no updates. Whether we put him as a limited participant or not, I don’t know that but he’s going to play (this Sunday).”
There was cautious optimism after Henderson missed the Rams’ Week 3 victory and was limited through the first two days of practice. However, McVay’s statement should mean Henderson can be considered as a starting option this weekend.
Jonathan Taylor, Indianapolis Colts
Jonathan Taylor has been a mainstay on the Colts’ injury report this week with a knee injury. The second-year running back was limited all week and carries a questionable tag into the weekend. If Taylor cannot take the field, Marlon Mack could be in line to see some carries, despite requesting a trade earlier this week.
Even if Taylor does play, the situation around him is not great. Indianapolis already ruled out Quenton Nelson and Braden Smith. Meanwhile, Mark Glowinski is questionable with a knee injury. If Glowinski is also absent, the Colts would be without three of their five starting offensive linemen this week.
Saquon Barkley, New York Giants
Much like Jones, Saquon Barkley was limited in all three practice sessions this week as he continues to return from his knee injury. Yet, Barkley carries no designation on New York’s injury report heading into Week 4.
Barkley saw his heaviest usage of the season in Week 3, carrying the ball 16 times and receiving 7 targets. That increase in usage is a good sign for Barkley’s fantasy managers heading into Week 4.
After appearing on Washington’s injury report as a DNP Thursday with a shin injury, Antonio Gibson was limited on Friday. Heading into the weekend, WFT listed Gibson as questionable.
If Gibson cannot play on Sunday, Jaret Patterson should see a bump in touches, with J.D. McKissic potentially leading the backfield.
D’Andre Swift, Detroit Lions
For the third straight week, D’Andre Swift will head into a Lions game with a questionable tag. A lingering groin injury limited Swift in practice all week. The second-year back has yet to carve out the role many expected. He has been competing for touches with Jamaal Williams, thanks in part to the injury hampering his ability.
Elijah Mitchell, San Francisco 49ers
Elijah Mitchell’s (shoulder) fantasy managers are left with an agonizing wait regarding his availability after the 49ers listed him as questionable Friday’s injury report. After bursting onto the scene in Week 1 of his rookie season, Mitchell has dealt with injuries the past two weeks.
If Mitchell struggles to get on the field, Trey Sermon should draw the start in Week 4.
Josh Jacobs, Las Vegas Raiders
Having missed the last two weeks through injury, fantasy managers are left concerned for Javcobs’ Week 4 status after he was limited on the Friday injury report. After he missed each of the last two games, it will be hard to just Jacobs as a starter in Monday Night Football over a player we know is playing Sunday.
While not the star-studded names of fantasy football, how do the following players impact the fantasy landscape with their presence on the latest injury report update?
Tony Pollard, Dallas Cowboys
Tony Pollard missed practice on Thursday with a “non-injury-related absence.” However, he returned to practice Friday as a full participant. He will carry no designation into Week 4’s game against the Panthers.
Giovani Bernard, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
After failing to practice for the third straight day with a knee injury, the Buccaneers ruled Giovani Bernard out of their Week 4 matchup against the Patriots. Bernard’s absence means we could see Leonard Fournette operating in a larger pass-catching role this week.
Rashaad Penny, Seattle Seahawks
Much like Bernard, Rashaad Penny was once again absent from practice Friday. The Seahawks listed him as out on the injury report for their Week 4 game. Penny has not managed to get back on the field since Week 1 this season.
