Truckers to Rally in Sault Ste. Marie in Support of Canadian Convoy - 9 & 10 News - 9&10 News

A rally taking place on Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie will be made up of truck drivers and others who have had enough of the vaccine mandate in Canada keeping them from work.

With not all truck drivers getting vaccinated, it’s left more work for those who have, including Jason Nichols.

“There’s less to do the work,” said Nichols. “There’s more loads to haul because you have less trucks. There’s also less people in offices to clear loads and come over from customs so it’s going to handcuff us all.”Us And Canada

However, it’s not just the vaccine mandate truckers are upset with, and they hope the upcoming rally will highlight some of those issues.

“It could touch base on a lot of topics other than the vaccine mandate like a dire need for hours or service reform,” said Nichols. “All of that is going to handcuff us from doing our jobs and alleviating the log jam in logistics.”

The lack of drivers has also had an effect on supplies between our two countries.

“Especially produce crossing the border,” said Erik Baron, Chippewa County Commissioner. “You don’t have as many drivers crossing the border, then you’re just not going to have the amount of goods getting to the manufacturers, where they need to go.”

Baron will be attending the rally and hopes to send a huge message.

“We just want to send a message to the federal government that these truck drivers and health care workers were considered essential workers for two years and all of the sudden they’re getting villainized if they don’t have a vaccine,”  said Baron.

The rally will be held Saturday at noon at the Bridge Plaza in Sault Ste. Marie.
