Losing a loved one is never easy, but members of the royal family have been putting on their bravest public figure faces as they grieve the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in Scotland on Thursday at age 96.
No matter how composed they remain in public, however, the royals are still people working to cope with loss and grief, and, according to a royal source, they're all having an understandably hard time with that.
"The royals knew Elizabeth’s end was near, but mentally, she was as sharp as ever right until it was her time to go," the source told Us Weekly. "All of the royals are struggling to come to terms with the devastating news."
While everyone in the royal family is struggling with the loss, the source says Prince Harry, who was en route as he raced to be by his grandmother's side when news broke that she had passed away, has been hit especially hard by the Queen's death.
"Harry is guilt-stricken—full of sorrow and regret about not saying goodbye to the queen. They met up a couple of times during the Platinum Jubilee, but he by no means expected it to be the last time he saw her," the source added. "He loved his grandmother with all his heart and is going through a terrible time right now. The news hasn’t fully sunk in."
Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, were in London for the WellChild Award when the Queen's health took a turn for the worse and members of the royal family rushed to be with her at Balmoral Castle. Although it initially seemed like Meghan would join Harry as he traveled to Scotland, she ended up staying behind, reportedly due to behind-the-scenes drama in the royal family and high tensions between Meghan and her in-laws.
"Tensions were so high and there was no way Meghan could have gone to Balmoral," a palace source told Page Six. "The fact the Sussex camp did say both Harry and Meghan were going — and then quickly retracted that statement — will tell you everything you need to know about the drama behind the scenes."
Harry didn't stay long at Balmoral, notably leaving before other royals on Friday, but he and Meghan did reunite with William and his wife, Kate Middleton, in Windsor on Saturday to greet mourners and well-wishers gathered at Windsor Castle.
